At the foot of Akershus Fortress, right downtown. There is no remote terminal and no mandatory shuttle: you walk down the gangway and fifteen minutes later you are in the streets of the capital.
A good hour, between wooded islands, summer cabins and sailboats, before the city appears at the head of its bay, backed by forested hills. Few capitals let themselves be approached so gently.
Akershus Fortress, which overlooks the berths directly, the Kvadraturen district with its 17th-century facades, the city hall, then the roof of the Opera House. The whole loop is walkable without hurrying.
Yes, free and open to everyone. The vast slab of white marble tilts toward the water and invites passers-by to walk to the top. It is one of the obligatory gestures of any visit to Oslo.
At the Munch museum, which displays his work across thirteen floors in the Bjorvika district next to the Opera House. The National Museum, further west, holds a famous version of The Scream within the country's largest art collection.
The maritime museums behind Norway's legend: the Fram Museum, which preserves the polar ship of Nansen and Amundsen, and the Kon-Tiki, with Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft. In season a ferry links the city hall quay to the peninsula in about fifteen minutes.
A monumental axis where Gustav Vigeland installed more than 200 bronze and granite figures, including the Monolith, a column of intertwined bodies cut from a single block. People from Oslo picnic and run there: the park belongs first to its residents.
The main avenue, linking the central station to the Royal Palace: terraces, street musicians, shops and public gardens. At the end, the palace stands on its rise, guarded by uniformed sentries, and the changing of the guard in early afternoon draws a crowd.
At Aker Brygge, the former shipyards turned into a promenade of restaurants and terraces facing the marina. A cone of shrimp, masts chiming, the fortress turning pink at sunset: that is how Oslo ends a day.
The Norwegian krone (NOK), with cards accepted absolutely everywhere — many Oslo businesses no longer take cash at all. Norwegian is the official language and English is spoken fluently; French, occasionally in the major museums.
