Istanbul Galataport Turkey | East Meets West Cruise Guide

Few cities offer an entrance quite like this one. The ship sails up the Bosphorus between two continents, passing cargo ships and ferries, lined by Ottoman palaces and minarets, before docking right in the heart of Istanbul. Galataport, opened in 2021 on the European shore, has tucked its terminal beneath a promenade of shops and restaurants: passengers step straight out onto the street, in Karaköy, amid the sixteen million residents of what was once Constantinople.

Karaköy and Tophane, the Harbourside District

No need to look for a shuttle: everything here starts on foot. The backstreets of Karaköy, just steps from the gangways, mix third-wave cafés, artisan workshops, and simit sellers. Walking along the waterfront toward Tophane, you'll pass the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque, a 16th-century work by the great architect Sinan, and its carefully restored hammam, where visitors can experience the ritual of the Turkish bath. The nearby Istanbul Modern museum displays Turkish contemporary art facing the Bosphorus. The Galata Tower, meanwhile, is reached by a twenty-five-minute climb up sloping streets; its circular balcony takes in the entire Golden Horn.

Sultanahmet, the Imperial Heart

Tram line T1, from the Tophane stop, crosses the Golden Horn and reaches the major monuments in a quarter of an hour. Hagia Sophia comes first, a 6th-century basilica turned mosque, its dome having defied fourteen centuries of architects. Across from it, the Blue Mosque spreads its six minarets and Iznik tilework. A few steps away, the Basilica Cistern lines up its columns in a watery half-light, and Topkapi Palace stacks its courtyards and pavilions above the strait. A single stop isn't enough to see it all: better to pick two or three sites and savour them fully than to rush through all of them.

The Grand Bazaar and the Flavours

From Sultanahmet, a ten-minute walk or one more stop on the T1 line leads to the Grand Bazaar, a covered labyrinth of more than 4,000 shops where carpets, lamps, and jewellery are haggled over in a lively theatre of a marketplace. The Spice Bazaar, near the Galata Bridge, fills the air with the scent of spices and Turkish delight. Between bouts of shopping, try a wood-fired kebab, mezze facing the water, or tea served in its signature tulip glass: Istanbul is as much to be tasted as admired. In the mosques, shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes carried in hand; visits pause during prayer times, which is just the right amount of time for a baklava.

If Time Allows

With a longer stretch of time at the dock, take the funicular up to Taksim Square and walk back down Istiklal Avenue, a pedestrian artery where an old-fashioned red tram still runs, past covered passages, bookshops, and pastry shops. Another, more contemplative option: hop aboard one of the vapur, the white ferries that have been zigzagging between the shores for more than a century. For the price of a public transit ticket, the strait unfolds past its palaces, mosques, and cypress-covered hills, gulls in escort.

In the evening, from the ship's deck, the city lights up on both sides of the water: golden minarets on one shore, glass towers on the other, and between them this strait that has watched Byzantium, Rome, and the sultans go by. You leave Istanbul with your senses full of calls to prayer, spice-scented air, and reflections on the water, with the slightly dizzying certainty of having only lifted a corner of the veil. That's exactly the reason to come back.

At Galataport, opened in 2021 on the European shore, right in the heart of the city. The terminal is buried beneath a promenade of shops and restaurants: you step ashore literally into the street, at Karaköy. No need to look for a shuttle, everything starts on foot.
