Frequently Asked Questions
The landing is right in the town centre, five minutes' walk from the old quarter. Two long jetties sometimes take several ships at once. Not a minute is lost to transfers: the day begins at the gangway.
Barely twenty kilometres inland, or twenty-five minutes by road. That promise is what makes this call so valuable: the best-preserved ancient city in the eastern Mediterranean is within reach of a single morning.
Two to three hours on site to enjoy it without rushing, plus the drive each way. Walking those paved streets means crossing a city that is nearly intact, not a field of ruins: giving it less time would be a waste.
The marble way, the colonnades, the temples and the baths, then, at the bottom of Curetes Street, the facade of the Library of Celsus with its two storeys of carved columns, the most famous image in all of ancient Turkey. Further on, the great theatre cut into the hillside could hold tens of thousands of spectators.
Some excursions add the House of the Virgin Mary on the nearby heights, or the village of Selçuk with its storks nesting on the columns. These additions lengthen the day: check the total duration before booking, especially on a short call.
The bazaar, which begins literally across the street as you return to the quay, then the pedestrian causeway out to Güvercinada. The ideal shape of the day fits in one sentence: antiquity in the morning, the Aegean coast in the afternoon.
The fortified islet at the end of the bay, linked to the town by a pedestrian causeway, whose Ottoman fortress was built to repel pirates. It gave the town its name: Kuşadaşı means bird island.
Over a glass of offered tea, without hurrying. Starting prices are high, negotiation is expected, and nobody takes offence at a polite refusal: the exchange is part of the pleasure. Even buying nothing, the walk through is worth it for the energy of the place.
Good closed shoes, a hat and water. Ancient marble is slippery under a smooth sole, the site offers little continuous shade, and the marble way runs downhill. This is not a museum visit; it is two to three hours of walking in full sun.
The Turkish lira. Cards work in restaurants, shops and for site tickets, but keep cash for the bazaar and taxis. Turkish is spoken, with fluent English throughout the quayside area: it is one of the easiest calls in Turkey.
