A Disney trip rarely goes wrong on budget. It goes wrong on the order of the decisions. People start by hunting for a price, when the price depends on choices they have not made yet. Here is the order that works, and what has to be booked first.

First decision: how many days

Not how much, but how many days. The per-day cost of a ticket falls as the trip lengthens, and four theme parks do not fit into three days without running.

The benchmark our advisors come back to: one day per park, plus a spare day for the pool, a water park, or a second visit to the children’s favourite. Seven nights allow that without watching the clock.

Second decision: when to go

The date moves three things at once: crowds, heat and price. September and early December are the windows our advisors recommend most. American Thanksgiving week, the days between Christmas and New Year, and spring break are the most expensive and the most crowded.

The date also decides what you will see: an EPCOT festival, a Halloween party, the Christmas overlay. Check the events calendar before locking in flights.

Third decision: on property or off

Staying at a Disney hotel includes transport from the airport and to the parks, and makes the day flexible: you go back for a nap and return. Staying off property often costs less per night but adds a car, parking and driving time.

With young children, the afternoon nap alone is worth the difference. Without children, off property makes a strong case.

Fourth decision: tickets and their options

A ticket is bought for a number of days and a start date. The option to visit more than one park in a day costs more and earns its keep mainly on short trips. Since January 2024, park reservations are no longer required for date-based tickets: you show up at the park you choose.

The paid service for faster queues is bought separately, in three forms: Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Premier Pass. None of them is required.

What gets booked first

Not the tickets, contrary to instinct. Table-service restaurants and limited-capacity experiences: character meals, the castle table, guided tours, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, runDisney races. Those windows open well ahead of the trip and empty within hours.

Tickets stay available. That is why a well-run file starts with the reservation calendar rather than with price shopping.

What actually moves the price

Four things, in this order. The date, because Disney prices by the day. The length, because the cost per day falls as the trip grows. The hotel category, which runs from single to triple on the same property. Then the add-ons: ticket options, dining plan, paid experiences.

You will not find amounts on this page, and that is deliberate. A published price is an expired price, and a price in U.S. dollars does not tell you what you will pay. Booked as a package through a Canadian agency, your trip is billed in Canadian dollars and the amount you approve is the amount you pay.

Paperwork for a Canadian traveller

A valid passport is required for every traveller flying to the United States, regardless of age, infants included. Check expiry dates across the whole family now: renewals take time and this is the most expensive avoidable mistake in the file.

The normal permitted stay runs up to six months, and stays beyond thirty days carry a registration requirement with U.S. authorities. Travel insurance belongs in the same conversation: provincial coverage does not meaningfully follow you into the United States. Confirm current conditions at travel.gc.ca before departure.
