Walt Disney World has two water parks, Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. They are not included with a theme park ticket and, most of the time, only one of the two is open. That single fact drives everything else.

One open at a time, usually

Disney alternates its two water parks by season: while one takes guests, the other closes for refurbishment. Right now Disney’s Blizzard Beach is open and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is temporarily closed.

The practical consequence: before paying for an option that admits you to the water parks, have us check which one will be open on your dates. A family set on the Typhoon Lagoon wave pool who ends up at Blizzard Beach was not misled, they simply booked without asking.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach

The park plays a melting ski resort: a chairlift climbs to the summit, the slides run like ski trails, and Summit Plummet is one of the steepest drops in any water park.

It is the more vertical of the two and the one teenagers prefer. Younger children have their own area, well away from the big slides.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

The park tells the story of a fishing village hit by a storm. Its wave pool is the centrepiece, with waves strong enough to surprise, and the whole place suits a quieter family day.

A lazy river loops around it, and small children have their own section. It is the natural pick when the group has more young children than thrill seekers.

How access works

Three routes lead to the same place. The Water Park and Sports option is added to a theme park ticket and gives as many visits as the ticket has days, usable also at mini golf, the Oak Trail course or the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Park Hopper Plus option adds the freedom to change theme parks during the day. And a one-day water park ticket can be bought on its own, with no theme park ticket at all.

That third route is the forgotten one, and often the right one: a single swimming day in the middle of a trip does not need an option attached to every day of the ticket.

Where it fits in the week

A water park belongs in the middle of the trip, when legs start counting the kilometres. It is the most restful day of a Disney holiday, and the one that saves a week with young children.

Two caveats that come from Florida itself. Afternoon storms close the slides until the weather passes, especially June through September. And in January or February the water can be genuinely cold even when the air is mild.

What to bring

Towels and lockers rent on site, changing rooms exist, and chairs go early as everywhere. Wear swimsuits under clothes to skip the changing room queue on arrival. Sandals that stay on your feet beat flip-flops on wet steps.
