Disney California Adventure carried a second-tier reputation for years. It has not deserved one for a long time. With more than thirty attractions, it holds its own beside its neighbour, and it has the single most in-demand ride in the resort.

Cars Land

Radiator Springs is rebuilt at full scale against a painted desert cliff. Radiator Springs Racers is the headline, a car race through the rock, and the longest queue of either park from the moment the gates open. Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, Luigi’s Joy Whirl and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree handle the younger end of the same land.

Pixar Pier and the rest

The Incredicoaster runs the length of the pier. Pixar Pal-A-Round comes in a fixed-gondola version and a swinging one, and they are very different rides, so choose deliberately. Toy Story Midway Mania, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Jessie’s Critter Carousel and the boardwalk games fill out the area.

Two things to know for a hot afternoon

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is an outdoor climbing and zip-line area with no queue at all. Animation Academy teaches you to draw a character in twenty minutes, seated and air-conditioned. Both are better uses of two hours than standing in a line.

World of Color after dark

The park’s night show plays on Paradise Bay in fountains, light and projection, and it rotates through different versions across the year, including a holiday edition. Check the day’s show time on arrival, because it shapes the end of your evening.
