A ticket alone will not get you into Disneyland in California. You also need a park reservation, for the chosen park on the chosen day. This is the step Florida regulars do not see coming, and the one that ruins trips.

The difference from Walt Disney World

Florida dropped park reservations for dated tickets in January 2024: the ticket is enough. California still requires both, valid admission and a reservation for the same park on the same day. Reservations are limited and busy dates go early.

In practice: a ticket bought without a reservation will not take you through the turnstiles. The step happens at purchase, not on arrival.

Ticket types

A ticket is chosen on three variables: the date, the number of days, and the number of parks per day. A one-park-per-day ticket makes you choose between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure each morning. A ticket allowing both parks on the same day costs more, but it earns its keep here: the two entrances are a three-minute walk apart, which makes moving between them realistic in a way Florida never allows.

Lightning Lane

The skip-the-line service is called Lightning Lane here, offered as a Multi Pass and a Premier Pass. Do not confuse it with Disney Premier Access at Disneyland Paris, which is a different system under a different name. Terms and prices vary by date and are confirmed at booking.

Magic Key is not for you

Magic Key will come up in your research: it is the resort's annual pass, built for Southern California residents who return several times a year. For a trip from Canada it makes no sense.
