Getting to Hawai‘i from Quebec

How long does it take from Montreal?

Start with the fact that surprises people: there is no non-stop flight between Montreal and Honolulu. One existed briefly, on Air Canada, between December 2021 and April 2022. It is gone. Any site advertising a direct flight from Montreal is repeating stale information.

The trip therefore connects. The usual gateways are Vancouver and Toronto on the Canadian side, and Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago or Minneapolis on the American side.

The transpacific leg itself runs six to seven hours from the west coast. With check-in at Montreal and a realistic connection, budget a long day door to door.

Canadian routes to Honolulu

Vancouver is served year-round to Honolulu by Air Canada and WestJet, in a little over six hours.

Calgary is seasonal in winter on WestJet. Toronto is seasonal in winter on Air Canada.

Two clarifications that end frequent questions: Air Transat does not serve Hawai'i, and Sunwing Airlines has not existed since May 2025, having been folded into WestJet. Seasonal dates and frequencies shift year to year; have your advisor confirm them on your actual dates.

The time difference, and what it does to your first day

Hawai'i never observes daylight saving time. Quebec moves; Hawai'i does not.

So from March to November, with Quebec on daylight time, Hawai'i is six hours behind. From November to March the gap narrows to five.

Westbound, the difference works in your favour: leave in the morning, arrive in the afternoon with a long evening ahead. It is the return that costs. Plan a buffer day before going back to work.

Entry requirements

A Canadian citizen flying to Hawai'i needs a passport valid for the length of the stay. Children included.

Canadians are not subject to ESTA: that authorisation belongs to the Visa Waiver Program, which Canada does not participate in, Canadian citizens holding a separate exemption.

The U.S. registration requirement that took effect in April 2025 applies to stays of thirty days or more in a single visit, and the U.S. Embassy in Canada states that people who arrived by air have nothing to do. A one- or two-week holiday is not affected.

One change is worth flagging: since late December 2025, biometric photography is required on both entry to and departure from the United States, with no age exemption. These rules change. Have them confirmed when you book rather than relying on any text, this one included.

When to go

The Honolulu weather office describes two seasons: a settled one from May to October carried by the trade winds, and a wetter one from October to April when frontal systems interrupt them.

Counterintuitively, the warmest months are not June and July but August and September, and the coolest are not December and January but February and March. The ocean lags the sun. Average highs in Honolulu run from about 27 °C in January and February to nearly 32 °C in August.

The sea stays swimmable year-round: roughly 23 °C in late winter to about 26 °C in early autumn. Ko Olina sits on the leeward coast, the island's driest.

Hurricane season, and why it matters this year

The central Pacific hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30.

For 2026, U.S. forecasts call for an above-normal season, with five to thirteen tropical cyclones expected against a normal four to five, against an El Niño background.

That is not a reason to stay home: most systems pass well offshore. It is a reason to discuss trip cancellation and interruption insurance with your advisor, and to understand your accommodation's cancellation policy before paying.

A few things nobody mentions

Leaving Hawai'i for the mainland, every bag — checked and carry-on — goes through a mandatory U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection. It exists to stop the spread of pests, and it adds time at the airport. Anyone returning to Canada via a U.S. connection goes through it.

On arrival, an agricultural declaration form is handed out in flight. Fill it in.

Some of O'ahu's busiest natural sites require advance reservations for non-residents and charge an entry fee. Not all of them, but it catches out anyone who simply shows up.
