Most passengers who come ashore in Livorno don't stay: Florence and Pisa draw the crowds from dawn. They're right, and yet they're missing something. Behind its appearance as a major Tuscan terminal, the port city designed by the Medici hides canals, fortresses and one of the liveliest covered markets in Italy. The best option may be not to choose.

Getting Your Bearings from the Gangway

Large ships dock at the Porto Industriale, about three kilometres from the centre; a shuttle takes you in a quarter of an hour to Piazza Grande, in the heart of the city. Smaller vessels sometimes get a berth at the Porto Mediceo, from where Via Grande is about a ten-minute walk. From Piazza Grande, bus number 1 reaches the train station in five minutes for those heading inland.

The Medici's Venice

Those who stay discover another Tuscany. In the 17th century, the Medici had a network of canals dug to link warehouses and docks: the district is still called Venezia Nuova. Boats glide under the bridges, between ochre façades and old storehouses, and boat tours take you around it along the water. Close by, the Fortezza Vecchia has guarded the outer harbour for five centuries, while its younger sibling, the Fortezza Nuova, has become a public garden. Near the dock, the Monument of the Four Moors, an early 17th-century work, remains the city's emblem.

The Belly of Livorno

The Mercato delle Vettovaglie occupies a 19th-century hall alongside a canal: the night's catch, pecorinos, sun-dried tomatoes and vendors calling out to passersby beneath the glass roofs. This is the place to come and understand the recipe for cacciucco, the soup in which several kinds of fish and seafood simmer together, served on garlic bread in the nearby trattorias. A single plate is enough to tell centuries of exchanges between fishers, Greek sailors and Levantine traders.

Facing the Sea

Following the waterfront south, the Terrazza Mascagni rolls out its black-and-white checkerboard above the waves, lined with a century-old balustrade. Livorno families stroll there in the late afternoon, ice cream cone in hand, as the light fades over the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The place sums up the local art of living: nothing to buy, nothing to do, except gaze at the Mediterranean.

Planning Your Day

A word on organization, as the temptations are many. If the city of the Duomo is your goal, leave early and keep a good two-hour margin before sailing time: the rail line is reliable, but late-afternoon delays spare no one. The neighbour on the Arno, being closer, combines easily with an afternoon in Livorno. Excursions sold on board, more expensive, have the advantage of guaranteeing your return to the ship. As for train tickets, the machines accept international cards, and validating your ticket before boarding remains mandatory on Italian regional lines.

Time to Choose

Florence dazzles, Pisa intrigues, Livorno wins your heart. Many cruise passengers go back on board with photos of the Leaning Tower; a few bring home the memory of a checkerboard facing the sea and a spicy fish soup. The wisest promise themselves to come back and reconcile all three by taking their time, and that is no doubt the best conclusion a Tuscan day can offer.
