Frequently Asked Questions
At one of the port’s two terminals, and the difference matters. Bell Street Terminal at Pier 66 sits directly on the downtown waterfront; Smith Cove Terminal at Pier 91 lies at the back of Elliott Bay, about 4.5 km to the northwest. Check your embarkation point before planning the day.
From Pier 66, yes: ten minutes’ walk to Pike Place Market and about twenty to the Seattle Center. From Pier 91, no: allow around ten minutes by car to the commercial core.
In three hours: Pike Place Market, the waterfront promenade and the big wheel. In five, add the Space Needle or the aquarium. With a full day, continue to the Olympic Sculpture Park and finish in Pioneer Square.
Seattle’s central market, open since 1907. Fishmongers throw salmon over the counters to applause, florists make up inexpensive bouquets, and the lower levels hide stalls of old records, spices and oddities. Allow time: it keeps people longer than they plan.
On a clear day, yes. Built for the 1962 World’s Fair, its observation deck takes in the bay, the towers and the mountain ranges framing the city. Under low cloud the point evaporates and the money is better spent elsewhere.
Museums and gardens around the Space Needle, including the galleries devoted to the blown glass of Chihuly, a local son. The area is walkable from Pier 66 or reached by monorail from Westlake Center, a retro experience inherited from the 1962 fair.
The Olympic Sculpture Park, to the north, presents its monumental outdoor works free of charge among lawns and views of the Olympic Mountains. The rebuilt waterfront promenade and the benches facing the bay cost nothing either.
Yes. The city aquarium shows sea otters and giant Pacific octopus, the big wheel reaches out over the bay, and the market puts on a free show. All of it works without a car from Pier 66.
The US dollar and English. Credit cards are accepted everywhere and restaurant tipping runs 15 to 20 percent.
June through September, matching the Alaska cruise season: it is the driest stretch and the one when Mount Rainier shows itself most often. A waterproof layer stays useful in any season.
