Frequently Asked Questions
At Pinto Wharf, a row of 18th-century port warehouses converted at the foot of the walls. Entering the harbour is a highlight in itself: the ship slides into the Grand Harbour between golden limestone bastions tens of metres high, close enough to make out the sentry boxes.
By the Barrakka Lift, a 58-metre panoramic elevator five to ten minutes' walk along the water from the quay. It carries passengers up to the Upper Barrakka gardens in under a minute, for a modest fare. It is the shortcut that spares you the climb in the heat.
Everything on foot. The peninsula measures barely a kilometre by 600 metres: the Upper Barrakka gardens, St John's Co-Cathedral, Republic Street and the Grand Master's Palace link up effortlessly. If time remains, a crossing to Birgu in a traditional boat rounds out the day.
Because of the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of the Order of St John repelled the Ottoman fleet. Their grand master, Jean de Valette, immediately had a fortified grid-plan city built on the peninsula, one of Europe's first planned new towns. The whole is UNESCO World Heritage listed.
Behind an austere facade, one of the most exuberant Baroque interiors in the Mediterranean: painted vaults, marble-inlaid tomb slabs covering the entire floor, chapels competing in ornament according to the Order's langues. In the oratory waits The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, the largest canvas Caravaggio ever painted and the only one he signed.
In the morning, before the tour groups arrive. It is the most visited site on the island and ships disembark at roughly the same hours: half an hour's head start completely changes the experience in front of the Caravaggio.
It is a military ritual centuries old: every noon, the saluting battery below the Upper Barrakka gardens fires the traditional cannon shot. From the gardens' arcades, the view frames the entire Grand Harbour, from the shipyards to the bell towers of Birgu.
Yes. From the landing below the Upper Barrakka, dghajjes, the brightly painted traditional boats, cross the basin to Birgu in about ten minutes. The oldest of the Three Cities is then explored on foot, between the Inquisitor's Palace and the marina.
A pastizz, the flaky ricotta pastry that is the Maltese snack par excellence, with a coffee or a kinnie, the bitter soft drink Maltese people are devoted to. You take them standing, in a stepped alley, the way the locals do.
The euro, with Maltese and English both official languages, which makes this a particularly easy call. Malta is part of the European Union and the Schengen area. Credit cards work everywhere.
