Amsterdam opens itself to cruise passengers as to no one else: through water, which is its reason for being. The ship ascends the IJ, that broad arm of inland sea where ferries, barges and sailing boats cross, and comes to moor at the passenger terminal, a kilometre and a half from Central Station. Twelve to fifteen minutes' walk on flat ground, or a short tram ride, and you are at the threshold of one of the world's most singular cities: 165 canals, a Golden Age urban plan on UNESCO's heritage list, and more bicycles than residents.

First Steps in the Canal Belt

From Central Station, everything radiates outward. Rather than rush toward Dam Square by the main thoroughfare, slip toward Brouwersgracht, the canal of the old brewers: converted gabled warehouses, flower-lined bridges, inhabited barges compose the expected image right away, without crowds. From there, the ring of the great canals—Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht—descends southward in succession. Each bridge opens a perspective of water, narrow and tilted façades, bicycles chained in clusters. The Jordaan quarter, just to the west, adds its lanes of former artisans, its hidden courtyards and brown cafés where residents remake the world in hushed voices.

The Great Cultural Stops

The Anne Frank House, on the Prinsengracht, is visited only with tickets reserved online, often weeks in advance: if it is on your list, arrange yourself before the port-call. Further south, Museum Square groups the Rijksmuseum, where Rembrandt's Night Watch presides at the end of a gallery conceived like a nave, and the Van Gogh Museum, the world's largest collection of the painter. Count 3 to 3.5 kilometres from the terminal; the tram shortens the journey. An early visit, at opening, spares the longest queues.

The City From the Water

An hour of navigation remains the finest introduction: embarkation points abound near the old centre, and commented tours pass under the oldest bridges, skirt the warehouses of the East Indies and brush flowering barges. For a local and free version, free ferries cross the IJ in minutes toward Amsterdam-Noord, its waterside cafés and panoramic tower: the view of the port front on return is worth the trip.

Surviving Bicycles, Savouring the Rest

A safety rule first: the bicycle lanes, often tinted red, belong to cyclists, who ride fast and do not stop. Look both ways, twice. With that precaution taken, the city is savoured on foot: marinated herring sliced at the counter, chips in a cone, cheeses to sample in speciality shops, and the ritual of the terrace at the first ray of sun. The floating flower market, on the Singel, adds a coloured stop along the way, and the Beguinage, a silent courtyard hidden behind an ordinary door, offers an unexpected refuge steps from the bustle of the centre.

Amsterdam will not let itself be summed up in a port-call, and that is quite right. You depart with fragments: a reflection of a gable in dark water, the chime of a church, the tinkle of bicycle bells. The city was built by merchants who always came back; it produces the same effect on today's travellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

At the passenger terminal on the IJ, about a kilometre and a half from Central Station. Allow twelve to fifteen minutes' flat walk, or a short tram ride.
Yes, easily. The walk to Central Station is flat and takes about fifteen minutes, and the whole old centre radiates from there.
The great canal ring — Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht — on foot, an hour's guided boat trip, and one museum if the schedule allows. Trying to do everything is the surest way to see nothing.
Yes, absolutely. It can only be visited with tickets booked online, often weeks ahead. If it is on your list, arrange it before the call.
On Museum Square, 3 to 3.5 kilometres from the terminal: the Rijksmuseum, where Rembrandt's Night Watch presides at the end of a nave-like gallery, and the Van Gogh Museum, the world's largest collection of the painter. The tram shortens the trip.
By going at opening time. An early visit spares you the longest lines, especially at the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.
Yes, free ferries cross the IJ in minutes to Amsterdam-Noord, with its waterside cafés and panoramic tower. The view of the harbour front on the way back is worth the trip alone.
