Frequently Asked Questions
At the Stazione Marittima, in the middle of the Neapolitan theatre: Vesuvius on one side, the Castel Nuovo on the other. No transfer, no waiting; Italy's third city begins at the end of the quay.
The Castel Nuovo and its white marble triumphal arch, facing the terminal. Ten minutes' walk brings piazza del Plebiscito, framed by the royal palace and the basilica of San Francesco di Paola. Right beside it, the Galleria Umberto I and the Teatro San Carlo, Europe's oldest opera house still in use.
The ancient Greco-Roman artery slicing the historic centre in a straight line, hence the name, a quarter of an hour's walk from the terminal. UNESCO-listed, it concentrates baroque churches, street food stalls, the nativity workshops of via San Gregorio Armeno and courtyards echoing with scooters.
At the Sansevero Chapel in the historic centre: a marvel of marble whose veil seems damp. It is one of the city's most astonishing works, and access is capped.
You have to choose. City version: Castel Nuovo, piazza del Plebiscito, Spaccanapoli, a pizza in a historic pizzeria. Ancient version: the national archaeological museum, two hours minimum, or Pompeii by excursion. Combining them means running all day.
By the Circumvesuviana suburban train from the central station, about 40 minutes. The organised excursion remains the simplest option from the quay. Antiquity enthusiasts sometimes prefer Herculaneum, more compact and better preserved.
The margherita was created in these streets in honour of a queen, and the historic pizzerias of the centre still serve it: soft dough, tomato, fior di latte, basil, wood oven. Queues lengthen fast at midday: aim for the very start of service or take your slice folded in four, a libretto.
The funicular climbs to Vomero for the view from the San Martino charterhouse and Castel Sant'Elmo. It is the city's best balcony, and the ride is part of the pleasure.
The city disorients at first: heavy traffic, blackened facades, brutal contrasts between palaces and working-class alleys. The main visitor routes can be walked without concern during the day, but keep your belongings close in crowds and avoid displaying valuables.
The euro and Italian, with Neapolitan everywhere. English is spoken in museums and tourist businesses. Keep cash: the historic pizzerias and street stalls often work in coin.
