Frequently Asked Questions

At one of three piers on the west coast, depending on the line. Punta Langosta puts you straight into San Miguel; the International and Puerta Maya piers are about five kilometres south, with taxis queued and fixed fares posted, roughly ten minutes to the centre.
Yes from Punta Langosta, which opens directly onto San Miguel and its malecón. From International and Puerta Maya, take a taxi: five kilometres of unshaded coast road is not a shore-call walk.
Snorkel in the morning, either Chankanaab from the shore or Palancar and El Cielo by boat, then San Miguel and its malecón in the afternoon. For variety, swap the second half for the San Gervasio Maya site.
Because Jacques-Yves Cousteau dived here in the early 1960s and ranked these reefs among the finest in the world. On the big southern reefs, Palancar and Columbia above all, visibility often exceeds thirty metres.
A park a quarter-hour by taxi south of town combining a groomed beach, botanical garden and lagoon. You enter the water from shore to swim over coral and sunken statues that have become artificial reefs. Chairs, lockers and restaurants on site make it an easy choice for families.
A white sand shallow scattered with starfish, where the turquoise water comes up to your waist. It is usually added to half-day trips to the southern reefs, and it is the image most passengers take home from the island.
No, or only with great caution. The east coast faces the open sea: stunning to look at, but given over to wind and waves. The sheltered west coast is where you swim and where the ships berth.
The Mexican peso, with US dollars accepted everywhere near the piers. Prices become reasonable again two streets back from the waterfront, and that is precisely where cards are least useful.
San Gervasio, in the island's wooded interior: the remains of a Maya sanctuary to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility, where mainland women came on pilgrimage. The ruins are modest next to those on the mainland, but the visit offers an hour of shade, iguanas and history half an hour from the pier.
Yucatecan classics: cochinita pibil, tikin xic fish, lime ceviche. The restaurants in town all serve them, and the small public beach at Caletita, a kilometre south of Punta Langosta, lets you follow up with a swim among locals and visitors.
