The “Légendes des dieux” tour at a glance

Légendes des dieux (Legends of the Gods) is an 8-day, 7-night Club Med Discovery tour of mainland Greece, listed under the Cultural Treasures theme. It starts and ends in Athens, looping through Thessaly, Phocis and the Peloponnese. The highlights follow one another: the Byzantine monasteries of Meteora perched on their rock pillars, the sanctuary of Delphi and its bronze Charioteer, Olympia where the Games were born, then Epidaurus and Mycenae before the Acropolis and sunset at the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. You stay in five hotels chosen stage by stage, from the Royal Olympic in Athens to the Amalia in Nafplio. Full board with a drinks package, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, guided visits and a French-speaking local guide are included. How does the tour unfold, day by day?

On day 1, you settle in at the Royal Olympic in Athens. The next day, you head north for 350 km to Kalambaka, at the foot of Meteora. Day 3 is devoted to the Byzantine monasteries clinging to the rocks, with a meeting that stays with you: a monk and painter who carries on the ancestral gestures of the Orthodox icon. The road then winds down 180 km to Arachova, a mountain village close to Delphi. On day 4, you visit the site and museum of Delphi, where the bronze Charioteer waits in its gallery, then drive 190 km to Olympia.

What do you see in the second half of the trip?

On day 5, the road crosses the Peloponnese for 290 km, from Olympia to Nafplio, a former capital set right by the sea. Day 6 brings together three great names: Epidaurus and its ancient theatre, Mycenae, Agamemnon's city, and the Corinth Canal, before returning to Athens after 170 km. Day 7 belongs to the capital: the Acropolis, then the lanes of the Plaka, and finally the road to Cape Sounion to watch the sun set behind the Temple of Poseidon, one of the most photogenic sites in the country. Which hotels do you stay in during the tour?

In Athens, the Royal Olympic welcomes the group at the beginning and end of the trip, for three nights in all. In Kalambaka, the Amalia lets you ride up to Meteora first thing in the morning. In Arachova, the Domotel Anemolia overlooks the valley, a stone's throw from Delphi. In Olympia you stay at the Europa, and in Nafplio at the Amalia. The middle of the tour moves at one night per stop, then the last two nights in Athens let you finish gently, without repacking.

What is included and what costs extra?

Full board runs from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8, with a drinks package at every meal: half a bottle of water and a quarter litre of wine or a soft drink. Travel is in an air-conditioned vehicle with water on board, and the guided visits on the program are included. Paid separately: international flights, transfers between the airport and the hotel, extra drinks, local tourist taxes and personal expenses.
