The Club Med experience at a glance

Club Med was born in 1950 from an idea by Gérard Blitz and Gilbert Trigano: holidays where people live together, where money disappears for a week and where sport, celebration and meeting others are part of the trip. Today, nearly 70 Premium and Exclusive Collection Resorts carry on that spirit, in the sun, in the mountains and aboard the sailing ship Club Med 2. What links them is the G.O team, who teach by day and take the stage at night, and a way of living the resort as a village rather than a hotel. People come as families, couples, friends or on their own, and most come back to find that atmosphere again.

Where does the Club Med spirit come from?

From a post-war summer. In 1950, Gérard Blitz and Gilbert Trigano founded a holiday club whose motto fits in one sentence from Blitz: the purpose of life is to be happy. People slept in tents, ate at long tables, played sports together and used first names. The Mini Club arrived in 1967 and invented holidays where parents get to breathe too. In 2004, Club Med moved upmarket, then in 2007 launched the Exclusive Collection with La Plantation d'Albion, in Mauritius. Seventy-five years later, the tents have become Resorts, but the original idea is intact.

Who are the G.O and G.M?

The G.O, the Gentils Organisateurs, are the soul of the resort. In the morning, one teaches you to sail a catamaran, another runs the kids' club or the front desk. At night, the same people take the theatre stage, then come to get you for a dance. They often eat at your table and quickly remember your name. You are a G.M, a Gentil Membre, from your very first booking. At the head of the team, the Chef de Village sets the tone for the week: he or she welcomes you, goes from table to table and introduces the show.

Why a village rather than a hotel?

Because you live there as in a village. The rooms are set along flowering paths, and everything is within walking distance: the restaurant, the bar, the theatre, the boutique, the spa, the sports grounds, the beach or the foot of the slopes. You see the same faces from one meal to the next, you make plans for tomorrow's sailing lesson, and by the third day you feel like a local.

What does a day at Club Med look like?

It starts at the pace you choose. The kids head to their club after breakfast, and parents have a whole morning ahead of them. You can take a tennis lesson, try the flying trapeze, go paddleboarding or do nothing at all by the pool. At noon, the buffet brings everyone together. The afternoon brings a second lesson, a nap, an impromptu tournament or a spa treatment. At the end of the day, you meet the kids, who have their own stories to tell, and the family comes back together for drinks.

And the evenings?

They are part of Club Med's reputation. After dinner, the G.O team puts on a show at the theatre, different every night. Some evenings have a dress theme, and almost everyone plays along. Then the dance floor comes alive with the Club Med routines, the famous Crazy Signs, which children learn in two days and keep asking for at home for months. Those who prefer calm always find a corner of the terrace to end the evening under the stars.

Does the experience change from one Resort to another?

The spirit stays the same, the setting changes everything. At Club Med Punta Cana, the circus school and the water park set the week to a family rhythm. At Club Med Turkoise, reserved for adults, the mood is all about Grace Bay beach and grown-up evenings. In the mountains, the day revolves around the slopes, with ski lessons included from age 4. And aboard Club Med 2, you live the experience on a five-masted sailing ship, from one port of call to the next.

Who is the Club Med experience for?

Families first, who find clubs from 4 months to 17 years and parents finally on holiday. Couples, who choose an Exclusive Collection space or an adults-only Resort. Groups of friends, who meet at lessons and at the evening party. And solo travellers, who like never having to eat alone unless they want to. Regulars end up with a favourite resort, the way some families have their cottage.

What is the Great Members program?

It is Club Med's loyalty program. You join from your first booking, at the Turquoise level, then move up levels as your stays add up. Benefits vary by level and relate to the stay itself, such as your welcome or certain services at the Resort. Your advisor links your member number to each booking so every stay counts.

How do you choose your first Club Med?

By starting with the right question: who is travelling, and when? The age of the youngest child, the week you have in mind, the flight time you accept and the atmosphere you are after quickly narrow down the Resorts. For a first stay from Quebec, the Caribbean resorts are the easiest to reach. Our page on the Club Med all-inclusive details what the package includes, and our current Club Med promotions show the offers that are open.

Frequently Asked Questions

G.O stands for Gentil Organisateur. They are the team members who bring the resort to life: sports instructors, kids' club leaders, front desk staff and performers in the evening shows. They often share meals with guests and give Club Med its warm, playful atmosphere.
G.M stands for Gentil Membre: that is you, the guest. The term dates back to Club Med's early days, when every guest became a member of a club. From your very first booking you are a G.M, and you join the Great Members loyalty program, which follows your stays year after year.
The resort's director, and much more than a manager. He or she welcomes guests, makes sure the week goes well, goes from table to table at dinner and often introduces the evening show. Many regulars even choose their next stay according to a Chef de Village they enjoyed.
They are Club Med's signature dance routines, performed by the G.O team and picked up by guests on the dance floor, often early in the evening. They take a few minutes to learn, and children love them. Many families still dance them at home in the living room when they miss the week.
Entirely up to you, and always invited. The G.O team suggests, and everyone picks their own pace: some go from lesson to tournament to show, others spend the week between the beach and a book. Both ways of living the resort are welcome, which is what makes the atmosphere pleasant for everyone.
The teams are international, and French and English are the common languages in most Resorts, often along with the local language. In the French Caribbean Resorts, at Club Med Québec Charlevoix and in Europe, French is widely spoken. Your advisor tells you the Resorts where you will most easily be served in French.
The mood is relaxed during the day. In the evening, slightly smarter attire is customary at the main restaurant, and some evenings have a colour or style theme announced in the program. Pack something white and a colourful touch: you will be ready for most themed nights.
Yes, and it is a very popular option for birthdays, family reunions and trips with friends. The Mini Group offer, shown on our promotions page, adds a discount when six or more adults travel together. Your advisor books neighbouring rooms when possible and coordinates everyone's flights.
Yes, especially in an Exclusive Collection Resort or Exclusive Collection space, quieter and more intimate. The Indian Ocean Resorts, such as La Plantation d'Albion in Mauritius, are very popular with newlyweds. Mention the occasion to your advisor: they pass it on to the Resort with your file.
Club Med operates nearly 70 Premium and Exclusive Collection Resorts, plus the sailing ship Club Med 2. They are found in the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Indian Ocean and in Quebec, with Club Med Québec Charlevoix a few hours' drive from Montreal.
