What is the itinerary from Delhi to Jaisalmer?

The first two days in Delhi reveal the old city, its great mosque, temples and monuments. On day three, a flight takes you to Udaipur, the city of lakes, and the night is spent at the Taj Lake Palace. Day four is devoted to Udaipur's temples and gardens. On day five, you stop at the Jain temples of Ranakpur, carved in marble, before reaching Rohet. On day six, a jeep safari takes you to a Bishnoi village, then the road heads to Jaisalmer. On day seven, you explore the golden sandstone fortified city and ride by jeep into the dunes of the Thar Desert.

How does the tour continue to the Taj Mahal?

Day eight leads to Jodhpur, the blue city, and its Mehrangarh Fort, perched on a rock above the houses. Days nine and ten are spent in Jaipur, the pink city: you climb to Amber Fort and visit the Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory. On day eleven, you stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the former Mughal capital, before arriving in Agra. Day twelve is the day of the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. On day thirteen, you return to Delhi, where the tour ends.

What are the strongest moments of this India trip?

The night at the Taj Lake Palace, a palace that seems to float on Lake Pichola, is among the finest memories of the trip. The jeep safari to a Bishnoi village lets you meet this ancestral community, known for protecting animals and trees. The dunes of Jaisalmer at sunset show a whole other face of Rajasthan. And of course the Taj Mahal, discovered in Agra after twelve days of forts and palaces, keeps all its power.

What does the Ganges Valley extension include?

The extension adds 4 days and brings the trip to 17 days and 16 nights. A train links Agra to Jhansi, from where you reach Orchha, its palaces and its cenotaphs by the river. You then visit the carved temples of Khajuraho, and a flight takes you to Varanasi, also called Benares, the holy city on the banks of the Ganges. Nights are spent at the Shatam Jeeva Ashram in Orchha, at the Chandela, a 4-star hotel, in Khajuraho, and at the Taj Ganges, a 5-star hotel, in Varanasi. The train, the flight and meals are included.

Which hotels do you stay in during the tour?

The programme focuses on places with character. In Delhi, you stay at the Taj Palace, a 5-star hotel, and in Udaipur at the Taj Lake Palace. Rohet Garh is a historic family residence, and Fort Rajwada, in Jaisalmer, echoes the architecture of desert palaces. Next come the Taj Hari Mahal in Jodhpur, the Taj Jaimahal Palace in Jaipur and the Taj Agra, all 5-star hotels. Your advisor confirms the exact list when you book, as an equivalent hotel may replace the one announced.

What is included and what is paid separately?

The package includes the domestic flight from Delhi to Udaipur, road travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing, porterage and local taxes. Full board runs from breakfast on day two to dinner on day thirteen, or day seventeen with the extension, with one local drink and tea or coffee at every meal. International flights, airport transfers, the visa, tips, personal expenses and optional insurance are paid separately. Your advisor books all of this with the tour.

Who guides the group in Rajasthan?

A French-speaking local tour guide stays with the small group throughout the tour. They know the legends of the maharajas, temple etiquette and the best times to avoid the crowds at the Taj Mahal. Departures are guaranteed from the first booking and assistance answers 24 hours a day. On such a long route, having the same guide from start to finish gives the trip real continuity.

What is the best time to discover Rajasthan?

The published programme is the winter season one, and your advisor tells you which departures are offered. It is also the most pleasant season in Rajasthan: from October to March, days are sunny and mild, and evenings are cool in the desert. Spring turns very hot, and the monsoon arrives in summer. For a Quebec traveller, escaping winter to the palaces of Rajasthan makes perfect sense.

How do you get to Delhi from Quebec?

You fly from Montreal to Delhi, usually with a connection. The tour is a loop, so you arrive and leave through Delhi. Your advisor books the flights with the tour and adds the transfers, which are paid separately. The India visa is paid separately: for your Canadian passport and visa, your advisor checks the requirements when you book. See also our travel to India page.

Which Club Med resort can you combine with the tour?

After two weeks on the road, the Maldives are a natural follow-up. Club Med Kani is 25 minutes by speedboat from Malé airport, and your days there are spent between the lagoon and the beach. Your advisor books the flight between Delhi and Malé and builds the complete trip. If Sri Lanka also tempts you, look at Sourires du Sri Lanka or Escapade au Sri Lanka, and see all the Club Med resorts in Asia and the Indian Ocean.
