What do you see in northern Thailand?

Day one in Chiang Mai starts with a bowl of khao soi, the curry noodles typical of the North, then a cruise on the Ping River, Warorot Market, a blessing from a monk and the climb to Wat Doi Suthep. On day two, you visit Wat Phra Singh and the village of Hang Dong, take a cooking class and meet lacquer, ceramic, silk and weaving artisans, before the night market. On day three, the road climbs to the Golden Triangle, with a meal in a Lahu village and tea and coffee plantations. Day four leads to the temples of Chiang Saen, a boat ride on the Mekong, then to Chiang Rai by pedicab to the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun.

How does the tour end, in Bangkok and Ayutthaya?

Day five starts with the elephants' bath with their mahouts, deep in the jungle, before the flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok. Day six is devoted to the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and its Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho and the Jim Thompson House, and the evening is spent on a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya. On day seven, you head north to Ayutthaya, the former capital of the kingdom of Siam, and the Bang Pa-In summer palace, then dine on the 52nd floor of a Bangkok tower. On day eight, you visit the flower market, glide by boat along the klongs, the city's canals, and see the Royal Barges Museum and Wat Arun, before departure in the evening.

What are the highlights of this Thailand tour?

The morning bath of the reserve's elephants with their mahouts, deep in the jungle, is the moment everyone talks about. The White Temple in Chiang Rai, all white and mirrors, surprises as much as it dazzles. The cooking class in Chiang Mai lets you bring a few recipes home. And the dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya, among illuminated temples, makes a fine first evening in Bangkok.

Which hotels do you stay in during the tour?

Just three addresses for the whole tour: you repack only twice. In Chiang Mai, you stay at the Rati Lanna, a 5-star hotel on the Ping River. In the Golden Triangle, the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort, a 5-star hotel, overlooks the jungle and is home to the elephant reserve. In Bangkok, the Banyan Tree, a 5-star hotel, offers a view high above the city. Your advisor confirms the exact list when you book.

What is included and what is paid separately?

The package includes the domestic flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok, road travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing, luggage handling and local taxes. Full board runs from lunch on day one to dinner on day eight, with one local drink and water, tea or coffee at every meal. International flights, airport transfers, additional drinks, personal expenses, tips, the Club Med annual membership fee and optional insurance are paid separately. Your advisor books all of this with the tour.

How many travellers are in the group and who guides it?

The group brings together 16 participants at most, accompanied by a French-speaking local tour guide from start to finish. Departures are guaranteed from the first booking and assistance is available 24 hours a day. With 16 people at most, you easily step into artisans' workshops and villages, and the guide has time for everyone.

When should you go on this Thailand tour?

Your advisor tells you which departures are offered. The cool, dry season, from November to February, is the most pleasant in the North, with mild mornings in Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle. Spring is hotter, especially in Bangkok. The rainy season, in summer, brings showers that are often short and a very green jungle. Bring light clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the temples.

How do you get to Chiang Mai from Quebec?

You fly from Montreal to Chiang Mai, with a connection, and return from Bangkok, with a departure planned in the evening of day eight. Your advisor books these flights with the tour and adds the transfers, which are paid separately. For your Canadian passport and entry requirements, your advisor checks everything when you book. Which Club Med resort can you combine with the tour?

Club Med Phuket, on Kata beach, is the natural follow-up: a domestic flight links Bangkok to Phuket, then the resort is about 1 hour 30 minutes by road from the airport. Families find the Family Oasis there, an area of about 1,100 m² with a water park. To extend the discovery, the Escapade à Khao Sok leads into the southern jungle and the Escapade Bangkok et rivière Kwai heads west of Bangkok. See all the Club Med resorts in Asia and the Indian Ocean.

Who is the Orchidées sacrées tour for?

It is for travellers who want to see the Thailand of temples, artisans and markets in one week, without organizing anything. Its length makes it a good first tour in Asia, easy to combine with a beach holiday. The pace is brisk but well spread out, with short road stages and a single domestic flight.
