How do the first days unfold, from Oslo to the fjords?

On day 1, you settle in at the Bristol hotel, in central Oslo. On day 2, a local guide shows you the capital: Vigeland Park and its sculptures, the Bygdøy peninsula, the Opera House, whose sloping roof you can walk on, and the Munch Museum. Day 3 is a train day you will talk about for a long time: 6 hours 30 minutes on the Bergensbanen across the Hardangervidda plateau, then the descent on the Flåmsbana, one of the railway lines with the most spectacular gradient, to the village of Flåm. On day 4, you sail for two hours on the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, with a stop in the small village of Undredal.

And the rest of the tour, all the way to Bergen?

On day 5, the 120 km road to Balestrand passes the Stegastein viewpoint, a platform suspended above the Aurlandsfjord, then a cider house. On day 6, a four-hour cruise links Balestrand to Bergen, where you discover the Bryggen quarter, its colourful wooden houses and its fish market. On day 7, the KODE museum, the ride up Mount Fløyen for the view over the city and a visit to Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg's home, round out the stay. Day 8 offers a free morning before departure. Which hotels do you stay in in Norway?

The tour has four 4-star hotels, and three of them host the group for two nights in a row. In Oslo, the Bristol is a classic downtown address. In Flåm, the Aurlandfjord Hotel hosts the group for two nights, at the head of the Aurlandsfjord. In Balestrand, the Kviknes, a grand wooden hotel on the Sognefjord, welcomes the group for one night. In Bergen, the Bergen Børs hosts the last two nights, a short walk from Bryggen.

What is included and what costs extra?

Full board runs from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8, with a drinks package: a local drink, tea or coffee at every meal. Second-class trains between Oslo and Flåm, the Sognefjord sailings, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, guided visits, luggage handling and local taxes are included. Paid separately: international flights, transfers between the airport and the hotel, extra drinks, tips and insurance. Your advisor books flights and transfers together with the tour.

Who travels with the group during the tour?

A French-speaking local tour guide accompanies the group from Oslo to Bergen, and local guides take over for the visits of both cities. Discovery tours run in small groups, with departures guaranteed from the first booking: once your seat is confirmed, the trip goes ahead. Assistance is available 24 hours a day. Train schedules and boat tickets are all handled in advance, so you simply enjoy the view.

Who is this tour made for?

It suits travellers who love nature on a grand scale and slow travel, where the journey matters as much as the arrival. Much of the route is by train and boat, seated facing the scenery, which makes the tour enjoyable for all ages. Walking visits stay easy, in the cities as along the fjords. It is also a fine choice for a first trip to Scandinavia, as a couple or with friends.

When should you go to Norway to see the fjords?

Your advisor tells you which departures are available and helps you pick the right one. The fjord season runs from late spring to late summer: days are very long, waterfalls run at full flow and villages are lively. The climate stays cool, even in July, especially on the Hardangervidda plateau and on the water. Bring warm layers, a raincoat and good shoes, and you will enjoy every sunny spell.

How do you get to Norway from Quebec?

You fly from Montreal to Oslo, with a connection. The return is from Bergen, since the tour crosses the country: your advisor books a multi-city ticket so you never retrace your steps. Transfers between the airport and the hotel are booked separately and added to your file. A valid Canadian passport is required, and your advisor checks the entry requirements at the time of booking.

Which Club Med resort pairs well with this tour?

After the fjords, a stay in Provence brings sunshine and warmth. Club Med Opio en Provence spreads over 100 hectares of olive groves in the hills behind Grasse, with a 9-hole golf course and kids' clubs from 4 months to 17 years. Nice airport is about 30 minutes away. All the details are on our page Club Med Opio en Provence, and every resort on the continent is on our Club Med resorts in Europe.
