The Belgian and Dutch waterways

AmaSonata works the Danube, the Rhine and the Main, but also the waterways of Belgium and the Netherlands, less known and rarely put forward. Our count on 26 August 2026 found 145 departure dates.

That network has nothing of the romantic Rhine about it. It is flat, gridded with canals, lined with windmills and brick towns. The distances between calls are short, so the ship ties up more often and sails less. Anyone who loves sailing days will find less to like; anyone who wants to step ashore every day will find more.

Tulip season

In spring the Dutch itineraries take on another colour, literally. The bulb fields are visible from the deck, and the gardens open for a few weeks only. It is also the period when these routes fill fastest: if that is your aim, the date books early.

Outside that window, the same network is travelled without crowds, with towns that go back to being towns rather than backdrops.

The hull

A hundred and thirty-five metres, 161 guests, 85 cabins, delivered in 2014. Twin balcony in the upper cabins, a window in the lower categories.

The other ships in the fleet

AmaReina and AmaCerto share its configuration. AmaVenita works the same network, and AmaBella concentrates on the Danube.

The line's formula

Meals included, wine and beer at meals included, soft drinks included, a daily cocktail included, guided excursions included at every port, Wi-Fi included, bicycles aboard the European ships.

Every outing carries an effort level announced in advance: gentle, regular or active. It is one of the better things this line does, because it lets two travellers in the same couple choose different paces on the same morning without one imposing their stride on the other.

Two exclusions to know: gratuities, which stay on your account everywhere, and air travel, unless it goes through the line's air programme. The line suggests a gratuity amount per destination; it does not add it to your bill automatically.

The everyday aboard

Adult clientele, with no youth programme and no childcare. Every traveller under eighteen shares a cabin with a responsible adult. The minimum age varies by destination and tightens on the African journeys.

A lift serves the main decks. The sun deck is reached by stair, which matters since that is where the river is best seen from. Boarding gangways vary with the quay, and some calls require crossing a neighbouring ship. Flag any mobility constraint when you book.

Booking here rather than elsewhere

Voyages AquaTerra is licensed by Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. Money paid goes through a trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents applies in the situations the law provides. That framework does not follow a booking made elsewhere.

A river cruise is built on logistics as much as on the choice of ship: flight, connection, a night on the ground, transfer to the pier. That is the part where a file comes apart when nobody is watching it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Danube, the Rhine and the Main, as well as the waterways of Belgium and the Netherlands, less known and rarely put forward in brochures.
Our inventory measured 145 departure dates on 26 August 2026, across 2026, 2027 and 2028, between central Europe and the Netherlands.
It is flat, gridded with canals, lined with windmills and brick towns. The distances between calls are short, so the ship ties up more often and sails less.
Not quite. Anyone who loves long sailing days will find less to like; anyone who wants to step ashore every day will find more. The choice turns on that.
In spring, over a window of a few weeks only. The bulb fields are visible from the deck and the gardens open for that period. Those dates fill very quickly.
A hundred and sixty-one guests in 85 cabins, the original configuration of the 135-metre series delivered between 2010 and 2015.
In 2014, the same year as several of its sister ships. It carries the line's twin balcony in its upper cabins and a fixed window in the lower categories.
Yes, in the upper cabins: a sliding glass wall and a real outdoor balcony in the same cabin. The lower categories open onto a window.
No imposed charge. Gratuities, however, are included on none of the line's destinations, and the suggested amount adds to your budget.
No. With gratuities, it is the only other notable exclusion. Everything else, meals, drinks at meals, excursions and Wi-Fi, is part of the fare.
The broad lines are at booking; the detail for the next day is given aboard the evening before. The effort levels appear there, which lets you choose the night before rather than on the morning.
No. It tightens markedly on the African journeys, where landing conditions require it. Have it confirmed for your precise destination rather than relying on a general rule.
Say so when booking and repeat it to the crew on the first day. A well-placed cabin and a well-chosen deck change a cruise week considerably.
Yes, and it is in the Netherlands that they earn their keep most. The country is flat, cycle paths go everywhere, and a call is covered far better by bike than on foot.
Yes, and it matters: the Compensation Fund does not cover cancellation for personal reasons, trip interruption or medical costs abroad. They are two distinct protections.
