Viking Bragi: 146 departures out of Passau, and a name that promises words
74 departures from Passau to Budapest, 72 from Budapest to Passau, measured on 25 August 2026, for 146 in total. The split is almost perfect, which leaves the choice of direction open until the last minute.
Bragi, god of speech
Bragi is the Norse god of poetry and eloquence, the one who greets the dead at Valhalla with a speech. The Old Norse word bragr means both poetry and being the foremost at something.
The name suits a ship whose onboard programme rests largely on lectures rather than shows. Viking builds its offer around the history of the regions it crosses: that is an editorial choice as much as a commercial one, and it draws a particular audience.
Four countries in seven days
Between Passau and Budapest the Danube crosses Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. No other European river crosses as many over so short a distance, which is why this route remains the best-selling in European river cruising.
Vienna and Bratislava lie less than 60 kilometres apart — the closest pair of capitals in Europe. The ship often takes in both on the same day or a day apart, which no land tour manages as simply.
The other half of that has to be said too. Being the best-selling route in European river cruising, it is also the busiest: at Melk or Dürnstein in July, three or four ships can be alongside on the same day. April, May and late September departures largely escape that, and the late-November Christmas market sailings ask for warm clothes rather than patience with crowds. If quiet matters more than weather, the shoulder season is the fair compromise.
Viking Aegir covers both German gateways at once, which widens the choice of dates when a precise week is imposed.
The hull: a Longship, 190 berths
135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. One crew member for every 3.58 guests, a ratio belonging to the Longship class.
Viking Vilhjalm and Viking Skadi also start from Passau, with 189 and 151 departures. Three identical hulls, three different calendars.
Getting there from Montreal
One mandatory connection to Munich or Budapest, for 13 to 15 hours door to door, then an hour and a half by road to Passau.
Going through an agency is not optional here
Try it from home: Viking's reservations site redirects Quebec addresses to a page announcing it is unavailable and inviting travellers to reach an agent. 30 seconds is enough to see it. On this line, a Quebec client has no other way in.
Our Viking River Cruises advisors give you in writing, before you book, the exact fare, the inclusions, the exclusions and the conditions. AquaTerra Travels follows Quebec consumer protection rules and participates in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
