Carnival Pride: the one Carnival ship you can drive to from Quebec

The Carnival Pride is an 88,500-gross-ton ship, 293.5 metres by 32.3, twelve decks, 2,134 guests at double occupancy — roughly 2,680 at full capacity — and 930 crew. Delivered in December 2001 by the Kvaerner Masa-Yards shipyard in Helsinki and entering service in 2002. She is based in Baltimore, Maryland, year-round: the closest Carnival homeport to Quebec, about 950 kilometres from Montreal, roughly ten hours by road via Interstates 87 and 81.

She is the only ship in the fleet a Quebec family can reach without flying. A valid passport is still required, even when you drive.

Where she actually goes — precisely

Three families of itineraries, all round-trip from Baltimore.

Seven-night Bermuda sailings calling at Hamilton. Seven- and eight-night Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean cruises including Celebration Key, Carnival's private destination on Grand Bahama. And 14- and 15-day Carnival Journeys to Greenland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

One clarification matters, because it is often misunderstood: the Carnival Pride does not run a weekly Canada–New England season. Canadian ports do appear, but only once or twice a year, on the 14-day Carnival Journeys: Qaqortoq and Nanortalik in Greenland, St. Anthony and Corner Brook in Newfoundland, Sydney in Nova Scotia. Those sailings fill far in advance and sea ice can force a port change. The rest of the year the ship heads south.

What her size changes

At 88,500 tons, Pride is less than a third the size of Mardi Gras. In practice: short lineups, workable elevators, and you learn the whole ship in a day — which suits first-time cruisers. In exchange: no roller coaster, no themed zones, and a sun deck that will feel empty if you are coming from an Excel-class ship.

Her distinguishing feature: a retractable-roof pool

The midship pool closes when the weather turns. On a ship leaving Baltimore in November or March, that is not decorative — it is what saves the day. The rest of the decor draws on Renaissance masters: the Raphael Lounge, the Normandie dining room, the Butterflies Lounge.

Fresh out of dry dock

The Carnival Pride emerged from a 22-day drydock at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport in spring 2026: expanded casino, new dining counters, refreshed shops and public spaces. A major refit had already been carried out in Cádiz in 2023. The ship is twenty-four years old, but she has been looked after.

Balconies are easy to get

About 630 of the 1,062 cabins have a balcony, an unusually high share for the Carnival fleet. Travelling as a family, aim for connecting cabins on decks 6 and 7, midship. Avoid deck 8 cabins directly below the pool deck, and the forward end of deck 1 next to the Butterflies Lounge. Suites are scarce — roughly 48 of them.

What disappoints

Three complaints recur, and they are fair. Age first: despite the refits, the early-2000s decor is loud and some bathrooms show wear. Lack of attractions second. And the Bermuda crossing third, which runs through open Atlantic with no islands to break the swell — it moves noticeably more than a Caribbean sailing. If you are sensitive, book midship on a lower deck and bring tablets.

Dining and connectivity

Included: the Normandie dining room, the Mermaid's Grille buffet, Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, the Carnival Deli, the Chopsticks Asian counter, Pizza Pirate, Swirls ice cream and basic room service. Extra charge: the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi and certain room-service items.

The ship runs on Starlink. An honest caveat: coverage weakens at times in Greenland waters and north of Newfoundland. On a round-trip Bermuda sailing the connection holds up without trouble.

One deadline worth acting on

Carnival Rewards replaces the former loyalty program on 1 September 2026. Existing status does not carry over automatically — you must enrol before that date to keep it. On Pride, upper tiers bring priority boarding at the Baltimore terminal, laundry service and priority reservations at Fahrenheit 555.

If Baltimore does not fit your dates

Carnival Legend is built on the same hull, yet she is the only one of the series spending summer 2026 in Europe, sailing from Dover to Iceland and the Baltic. Carnival Spirit keeps a beam narrow enough for the original Panama Canal locks, and she runs them twice between October 2026 and March 2027. For anyone tired of winter, Carnival Encounter stays in Brisbane the whole year: Australian dollars on board, a drinking age of 18, and a Cloud 9 thermal suite rebuilt in February 2026.

Book with an advisor

The Greenland Carnival Journeys come round only once or twice a year and sell early. A Voyages AquaTerra travel advisor will tell you which dates actually exist for the itinerary you have in mind. Call 1-866-628-6241.

They are added automatically to your onboard account each day, per person in the cabin, at a higher daily rate for suites. You can prepay them before departure. They do not cover the bar: a service charge is already added to every drink sold on board. On a 14-day Carnival Journeys sailing to Greenland the total adds up — budget for it.
It covers cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, soft drinks and specialty coffees, with a maximum of 15 alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period. Two rules matter: every guest 21 and over in the same cabin must buy it, and because Carnival Pride sails from Baltimore, a U.S. port, the package is active from day one. Bottomless Bubbles covers younger guests.
Yes — the ship is connected to the Starlink satellite network. Three plans are offered: Social for social media, Value for general browsing, Premium for streaming and video calls. An honest caveat: coverage weakens at times in Greenland waters and north of Newfoundland. On a round-trip Bermuda sailing the connection holds up without trouble.
Yes, as long as you accept a quieter format. Camp Ocean takes ages 2 to 11, Circle "C" ages 12 to 14, Club O2 ages 15 to 17, with evening care available. The WaterWorks aqua park and its slide fill sea days, and the retractable-roof pool rescues spring and fall departures. Far fewer attractions than on an Excel-class ship.
Yes. Carnival Rewards replaced the previous program in 2026, with four tiers: Red, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Status is now earned on money spent on the booking and on board rather than on nights sailed. On Carnival Pride, upper tiers bring priority boarding at the Baltimore terminal, laundry service and priority reservations at Fahrenheit 555.
More than on Carnival's newer large ships, and that is worth saying plainly. At 88,500 gross tons, Carnival Pride is a third the size of Mardi Gras, and the Bermuda run crosses open Atlantic with no islands to break the swell. If you are sensitive, book a midship cabin on a lower deck and bring tablets. Stabilizers handle the rest.
