    Two changes of name in six years, and how we prove it

    The Avalon Luminary left the line's fleet at the end of 2018, alongside two other hulls, when the brand decided to operate only ships composed mostly of suites. Since then the hull has changed name twice.

    She first became the MS Monarch Duchess, for an American tour operator. She now carries the name MS VistaNeo and sails the Rhine for a German tour operator out of Cologne, since 2024.

    How do we know? By the registration number. All three names share the same hull identifier in the river registers. This is neither a deduction nor a recycled press release: it is the same number, on the same hull, under three successive commercial flags.

    What she was

    One hundred and ten metres, built by Den Breejen in the Netherlands in 2010, one hundred and thirty-eight travellers in sixty-five staterooms. A generation before the sliding glass wall became standard, which explains her withdrawal.

    Her present name belongs to her German operator's own naming series and has no connection with the Avalon Vista, which is an entirely different ship, still in service with this line. The similarity of syllables misleads, and it has already misled readers.

    The active ships in the fleet

    The Avalon View is the newest of the 135-metre hulls. The Avalon Panorama is the lead hull. The Avalon Envision was built to the new standard. The Avalon Vista covers the Rhine, the Main and the Danube.
