A real sailing ship, not a set piece

Star Clipper is a four-masted barquentine from the Scheepswerven van Langerbrugge yard, at Ghent in Belgium, built in 1992. Sixteen sails, sixty-three-metre masts, and the distinction of being the first clipper built new since 1912. Two thousand two hundred and ninety-eight gross tons only, 111 metres by 15, four decks, 85 cabins, 170 guests and 72 crew. Maltese flag, registered in Valletta since 2010.

She sails about four times out of five, with an engine in support and twelve knots on the clock. That means days when you move slowly, when the heel is felt in the shower, and when the arrival time depends on the wind. That is not a drawback to hide: it is what you came for.

You climb the rigging

The line invites guests to help set the sails and to climb the rigging to the crow's nest. It is supervised, it is not compulsory, and it stays rare: on most ships, taking part in the working of the vessel means watching. If you travel with teenagers, that is the argument that will decide it.

What the fare covers, and what it does not

Let us be plain, because this is the leanest of the four large pages we rewrote this month. Included are accommodation, meals, some watersports and the onboard activities. Paid on top are drinks, gratuities and optional shore excursions. The line does not name Wi-Fi among its inclusions and we will not add it on its behalf.

Compare with MS Paul Gauguin, in our catalogue: nearly everything is included there, drinks and gratuities among them. Two small ships, two opposite philosophies. Do the full arithmetic before comparing the two, because the advertised fare does not tell the same story in each case.

What the calendar sells

One hundred and one departures are on sale on this page: fourteen in 2026, sixty-nine in 2027, eighteen in 2028. Lengths run from six to twelve days, eight days coming up twenty-nine times and seven days eighteen. Civitavecchia-Rome appears twenty-six times in all, Saint John's in Antigua seventeen, Panama ten, then Piraeus, Málaga and Puntarenas eight each. Summer in the Mediterranean, winter in the Caribbean and a Panama passage between the two: the rhythm of a sailing ship that follows the seasons rather than a timetable.

The two other sailing ships

Star Flyer is her twin, same rig and same size. Royal Clipper is larger, with five masts. Their pages carry only ten questions and answers instead of fifteen: we will complete them. The the line's own page explains the line.

No, they are paid on top. This is the leanest fare of the four large pages we rewrote this month, and it is worth knowing before comparing with an all-inclusive.
No, they are added. The line says so plainly, and we would rather repeat it than let you find out at disembarkation.
No, optional shore excursions are booked and paid separately. Included are accommodation, meals, some watersports and the onboard activities.
The line does not name it among its inclusions. We will not add it on its behalf: have it clarified before you pay if connectivity matters to you.

Star Flyer, same rig and same size, and Royal Clipper, larger and rigged with five masts. Their pages carry only ten questions and answers instead of fifteen; we will complete them.
It is one of the few where the answer rests on something other than a kids' club: you can climb the rigging and help work the ship. At a hundred and seventy berths the feel stays that of a tall ship, not a theme park.
We do not have the current conditions of carriage in front of us, so we assert nothing. No arbitration, no absence of arbitration, no claim deadline. Ask for the document before paying.
