Star Flyer: a 1991 four-masted barquentine, and 123 departures on our calendar

Star Flyer is the first of the three sailing ships at Star Clippers. We carry 123 departures across 73 dates and 59 routes, from 25 July 2026 to 11 March 2028. The Mediterranean in summer — Greek islands, the Turkish coast, the French and Italian rivieras — and the Caribbean in winter, with repositioning crossings between the two.

The ship

Out of the Scheepswerven van Langerbrugge yard, at Ghent, in Belgium, in 1991. Two thousand two hundred and ninety-eight gross tons, one hundred and eleven metres by fifteen, four decks open to guests, eighty-five cabins. One hundred and seventy guests, seventy-two crew. Four masts in barquentine rig, sixteen sails, about three thousand three hundred and forty-five square metres of canvas. Under sail she holds eight to ten knots.

Sail and engine, in that order

This ship runs under sail and under engine. The sail is real: you hoist, you sheet in, you hear the rigging working overhead. But a cruise schedule cannot be held by wind alone, and the engine takes over when it must. Anyone who boards expecting a hundred per cent sail is disappointed; anyone who knows beforehand is not.

What a hundred and seventy people allow

Anchorages large hulls do not approach, fishing harbours rather than terminals, and a crew that knows you in two days. In return: no theatre, no choice of restaurants, and narrow decks where people pass close. The upper deck of a sailing ship is not an esplanade, it is a working surface cluttered with lines and winches — and that is exactly what people come to see.

The other two sailing ships

Star Clipper is her sister hull, delivered the following year. Royal Clipper is the big one of the family: five masts, forty-two sails, two hundred and twenty-seven guests. If you want a sailing ship run in French, Ponant also operates a three-master, in an entirely different format.

On these ships, yes, within the limits the crew sets on the day. You can help hoist, take the helm under supervision and, depending on conditions, go up the rigging in a harness. None of it is guaranteed: it depends on the wind, the sea state and the officer of the watch. Do not book for that alone.
We will not assert it here. Star Clippers sells drinks packages and applies a gratuities policy we have not measured ship by ship. Ask your advisor for the written list before booking: on this point it is the only answer that protects you.

A sailing ship heels; that is its nature. She rolls less than a motor ship of the same size because the canvas steadies her, but she leans more. If you are sensitive, midships and a low deck remain the best places, and raise it with your advisor before choosing the cabin rather than after.
