Fincantieri delivered her at Marghera and she entered service in April 2004. Hers is the shortest hull of the four Vista ships, 285.00 m against 285.42 m for the Zuiderdam.
Because those figures are out of date. The 81,811 figure is her 2004 delivery tonnage, before the April 2007 yard period that added 34 staterooms and reworked public rooms. The current register gives 82,862 tons and 1,968 guests at double occupancy, consistent with the 984 staterooms she has carried since 11 ocean-view rooms were added in January 2026. When two sites publish the same round number word for word, it is almost always a copy rather than a verification.
She carries the fewest guests of the four at 1,968 double occupancy, 56 fewer than the Oosterdam on a near-identical hull. She is also the most recently refreshed, out of dry dock in Singapore on 18 January 2026. Her art collection follows the theme of Dutch heritage in the New World and includes an original Andy Warhol portrait. And she is the line's Asia specialist, the only one of the four wintering between Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan.
She opened the year in Asia with a 28-night crossing in February 2026, then moved to Alaska for the summer. The Alaska season runs between Vancouver and Whittier on seven- and eight-day itineraries taking in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Glacier Bay. From September 2026 she heads back south to Asia and settles into Singapore and Hong Kong for the winter. Her 4 to 18 January 2026 dry dock in Singapore came just ahead of that whole rotation.
From January to April 2027 she strings together 14-day Far East Discovery runs between Hong Kong and Singapore, 13- and 14-day Circle Japan itineraries, a Japan and South Korea route, and a 28-day Coral Triangle and Great Barrier Reef loop from Singapore in January. Summer 2027 brings her back to Alaska out of Vancouver, with a Seattle departure on 12 September. From Montreal, Vancouver is a nonstop, while Singapore or Hong Kong means two connections, roughly twenty hours of travel and a twelve-hour time shift.
On Asia itineraries, a VB or VC verandah on deck 6 or 7 lets you enjoy the early-morning arrivals into Japanese ports. The 11 ocean-view staterooms added on decks 1 and 7 in January 2026 are the newest aboard, though the deck 1 rooms sit low to the water and get noisy during manoeuvres. Deck 8 staterooms received completely rebuilt bathrooms in that same dry dock. Neptune Suites include Neptune Lounge access, which earns its keep on the 28-day itineraries.
She carries the Vista Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill, a fully rebuilt Canaletto as of January 2026, Lido Market, a Dive-In with a new order counter, and Explorations Café. Bars include the Ocean Bar, Explorer's Lounge, Sea View Bar and the Crow's Nest, the latter fitted with a bandstand stage since January 2026. Music plays in the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard. The Effy shop was rebuilt as an open-plan space with private consultation nooks.
Her Asia seasons demand very long flights from Montreal and itineraries of 14 to 28 days that rule out anyone with a single week off. The evening programme aims at an older crowd and the children's offering is thin outside the Alaska season. She also remains a 2004 ship: pleasant open decks, but no headline attractions. And no date has been published for her Evolution refit.
Have It All bundles a shore excursion credit, the Signature Beverage Package, specialty dining nights and Wi-Fi Surf. On a 14-day Far East Discovery between Hong Kong and Singapore that means two nights, split between the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto. On the 28-day Coral Triangle loop it rises to three nights and the excursion credit triples. Japanese ports are expensive for land transport, so that credit gets used quickly there.
A daily amount is added automatically to your onboard account, per person per day, children included, at a higher rate in suites. Holland America raised it in 2026. You can prepay at booking or settle at the end of the cruise, and it stays adjustable at the guest services desk. On the Westerdam's 14- to 28-day Asia itineraries the total mounts up, so quote it to the client at proposal stage.
The Signature Beverage Package covers wines by the glass, beers, spirits, cocktails, sodas and specialty coffees, service charge included, with a daily drink limit. On her Japan itineraries much of the day is spent ashore, in Kyoto or Nagasaki, which cuts onboard consumption. The 28-day Great Barrier Reef loop is the opposite, with long runs of sea days, and there the package pays for itself easily at the Crow's Nest and Ocean Bar.
Two plans are sold, Surf for browsing, messaging and social media, and Premium for video streaming and calls. They are priced per device and can be moved between devices. On the Westerdam's Asia routes, coverage is good in the China Sea and Japanese waters, and much patchier in the Coral Sea and the Coral Triangle. In Alaska, expect dropouts in the narrow fjords.
Yes, through Club HAL, organised as Littles aged 3 to 6, Middles aged 7 to 12, and teens aged 13 to 17 in The Loft. It matters most in the Alaska summer, where the Teen Ranger programme was extended in 2026 to every ship in the season. On the 14- to 28-day Asia seasons children are scarce and the club sometimes runs reduced hours. There is no after-hours childcare at any point.
Membership starts automatically after a first completed cruise, and credits build from days aboard, onboard spending and the double days granted to suite guests. There are five tiers, from Star Mariner to Five-Star Mariner. The Westerdam's long Asia itineraries are among the fastest ways to move up a tier in this fleet: 28 days in one go equals four one-week cruises. Benefits then scale from onboard shop privileges to private receptions and priority boarding.
Southeast Asian waters are generally calm, except during the northeast monsoon from November to March, when the South China Sea can build. The Sea of Japan and the Pacific off Honshu are livelier in winter. In Alaska, the Inside Passage between Vancouver and Skagway is sheltered, unlike the Gulf of Alaska on the crossings to Whittier. A stateroom amidships on deck 5 or 6 remains the best choice, and the ship carries active stabilisers.
