The last at the original size

Delivered in April 2023, Viking Saturn closes the series opened in 2015. The ships built after it belong to a different series, longer and heavier. It is therefore the last example of a format the line repeated ten times in eight years.

The delivery statement describes the fleet as composed of identical sister ships. That is the official phrase, and it is accurate: from one hull to the next, the deck plan, the cabin categories, the restaurants and the position of the facilities are the same. A traveller who knows one of these ships knows them all.

The hull

Two hundred and twenty-eight metres, 47,842 gross tons, nine decks, 930 guests in 465 cabins all fitted with a veranda, about 465 crew. Viking Vela belongs to the next and larger series. Viking Neptune and Viking Mars are exact sisters of this ship.

Should you prefer the newest?

Not necessarily. Within the series, a 2023 ship and a 2015 ship are the same ship, maintained on the same programme. The age gap does not show where people expect it to. What does show is the change of series: Viking Star is longer, wider and carries more guests.

Included, and not included

Included: one excursion per port, all meals, beer and wine at the two main meals, Wi-Fi with Viking's own note that speed varies, access to the Nordic Spa and the fitness centre, port taxes and fees.

Not included: gratuities. It is the point travellers used to high-end river cruising notice first, because the practice there is often the reverse. They are prepaid or settled aboard.

Also not included: optional excursions, drinks outside mealtimes, spa treatments and flights outside the line's air package.

A ship without a casino or a kids' club

Viking fits no casino, no children's programme, no production show and no formal night. The fleet is for eighteen and over, checked on embarkation day. Cabins have no third berth: there is physically no room for a family.

The line's founder explained the choice by the time spent ashore. In the evening, the ship's life sits in lectures, a pianist, a quartet and a library. It is not less. It is something else.

From Montreal

The port of embarkation is reached by air, with a connection in most cases. Arriving the day before is the prudent rule. On polar itineraries, where the flight ends at Ushuaia or Longyearbyen, the margin should be wider still.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the last ship built at the size opened in 2015. The hulls delivered after it belong to a different series, longer and heavier.
Not necessarily. Within the series, a 2023 ship and a 2015 ship are the same ship, maintained on the same programme. The age gap shows less than people expect.
Yes, and the line says so in its own statements. Deck plan, cabin categories, restaurants and the position of facilities are the same from hull to hull. The one known exception is the planetarium on two ships.
Nine hundred and thirty guests in 465 cabins, with about 465 crew. Every cabin sold has a private veranda, and the line sells no inside cabins at all.
In April 2023, at the Fincantieri yard in Ancona. It is the tenth and last unit of the series opened eight years earlier.
Forty-seven thousand eight hundred and forty-two gross tons according to the yard. The line rounds to 47,800 in its documentation. We publish the yard's figure, which is more precise.
Yes. Unlike some high-end river lines, Viking does not include gratuities in its cruise fare. You choose whether to prepay them or settle them aboard.
One per port of call. Additional excursions are optional and come on top. On a long itinerary the inclusion adds up to a considerable number of outings.
Our inventory measured 176 departure dates on 26 August 2026, counted on the ship's public page. That is a wide calendar, leaving the season open to choice.
No. Only two ships in the series carry one, and this is not among them. The rest of the configuration is identical to its nine sisters.
The next series is longer, wider and carries more guests. That is the real change of format in the fleet, far more significant than a year's difference within one series.
None, on any ship in the fleet. The line justifies it by the time spent ashore rather than by a shortage of space. A library sits where a casino would be.
With difficulty. Wi-Fi is included, but the line makes no commitment on speed, and a satellite link in open water does not behave like a home connection.
No. The minimum age is eighteen on embarkation day, and cabins carry neither a third nor a fourth berth. The rule holds across the fleet without exemption.
In Quebec, a licensed agency deposits the sums it receives into a trust account, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents steps in where the law provides. Your advisor gives you that in writing.
