The ship Viking called Viking Emerald has always carried her real name: Century Emerald. She is a Chinese vessel owned by Century Cruises, chartered by Viking from 2011 for its Yangtze programme. She still sails today, and she sells her own departures.

Why Viking chartered rather than built

Chinese regulation does not open the Yangtze to foreign owners the way the Rhine opens to Swiss companies. A western line that wants to sell the river works through a local partner, puts its name on the ship for the length of the contract and trains the crew to its own standards. That is what Viking did here.

The ship

Delivered around 2010 or 2011 depending on the source, one hundred and ten metres long by seventeen wide, six decks. In Century configuration she carries two hundred and sixty-four guests in one hundred and thirty-two cabins; under the Viking brand the figure was two hundred and fifty-six guests in one hundred and twenty-eight cabins, twenty of them suites and one hundred and eight with balconies. Her sister is Century Diamond.

The route

Chongqing to Yichang, the Three Gorges stretch, set inside a land tour running Shanghai to Beijing. That is the heart of Yangtze cruising: three gorges, one dam, and calls where the river is the way into the interior of the country.
