Royal Clipper: five masts, forty-two sails, and 137 departures on our calendar

Royal Clipper is the largest of the three sailing ships at Star Clippers. We carry 137 departures across 73 dates and 60 routes, from 25 July 2026 to 18 March 2028. The Mediterranean in summer, the southern Lesser Antilles in winter, Atlantic crossings between the two seasons.

A hull born twice

The hull was designed by Zygmunt Choreń, lengthened by twenty-four metres at the Gdańsk yard, then completed at the Merwede yard, in the Netherlands, in July 2000. Four thousand four hundred and twenty-five gross tons, one hundred and thirty-four metres eighty by sixteen fifty, five metres sixty of draught. Five masts, forty-two sails, five thousand two hundred and two square metres of canvas. Two hundred and twenty-seven guests, one hundred and six crew.

The model is a ship from 1902

Royal Clipper takes her rig from Preussen, the German five-master of the Flying P-Liner line launched in 1902 for the nitrate trade around Cape Horn. She is not a replica — the hull is modern and so is the equipment — but the silhouette and the sail plan come from there. When the forty-two sails are set, what you are looking at was thought out more than a hundred and twenty years ago.

Sail and engine, in that order

This ship runs under sail and under engine. The sail is real: you hoist, you sheet in, you hear the rigging working overhead, and the manoeuvres happen in plain sight on deck. But a cruise schedule cannot be held by wind alone, and the engine takes over when it must. Anyone who boards expecting a hundred per cent sail is disappointed; anyone who knows beforehand is not. That is the first thing to say, not the last.

The other two sailing ships

Star Flyer and Star Clipper are two smaller four-masters, from 1991 and 1992, carrying a hundred and seventy guests. They reach places this one cannot always enter. If you want a sailing ship run in French, Ponant also operates a three-master, in an entirely different format.

On these ships, yes, within the limits the crew sets on the day. You can help hoist, take the helm under supervision and, depending on conditions, go up the rigging in a harness. None of it is guaranteed: it depends on the wind, the sea state and the officer of the watch. Do not book for that alone.
We will not assert it here. Star Clippers sells drinks packages and applies a gratuities policy we have not measured ship by ship. Ask your advisor for the written list before booking: on this point it is the only answer that protects you.

A sailing ship heels; that is its nature. She rolls less than a motor ship of the same size because the canvas steadies her, but she leans more. If you are sensitive, midships and a low deck remain the best places, and raise it with your advisor before choosing the cabin rather than after.
Anyone looking for a theatre, a choice of restaurants and wide deck space. The upper deck of a sailing ship is not an esplanade: it is a working surface cluttered with lines and winches. That is what people come to see, or what puts them off.
