A three-month season, and what it imposes

The Jahan belongs to an Asian river shipowner, active in Vietnam and Cambodia, who sells his own departures in parallel and also works with other tour operators. The line charters her for a short season: January to March only. That is the most structural fact on this page. If your dates fall outside that window, this ship is not the answer.

Seventy metres, three decks, 24 cabins, 48 travellers, built in 2011. The decor draws on the British colonial period in India, and the ship's name refers to the Mughal emperor who had the Taj Mahal built.

Aboard and on the river

A club lounge, a dining room with a single service, an observation lounge, a spa with two or three treatment rooms depending on the source, a steam room, a fitness room and a lift. No formal dress code: dress is casual.

The route links Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap by way of Phnom Penh and the delta. Navigation on the Mekong depends on the water level, a generic constraint of the river: no limitation particular to this ship is documented.

One divergence worth flagging: the capacity and cabin count sold by the line are lower than those the owner publishes. One party's deck plans do not match the other's inventory. We use the figures of the company selling you the trip.

An owner's ship, a line's voyage

Let us name things. This hull does not belong to the company selling you the trip. It belongs to a local shipowner and is chartered. The line's own regulatory filing with the securities authority separates its owned ships from its chartered ones.

Practical consequence: the signature features of the owned fleet do not carry over here automatically. Read this ship's page rather than the line's. And know that the owner often sells his own departures in parallel, sometimes at a different capacity from the one the line announces.

On the brand: the National Geographic partnership is a licence agreement, not a link of ownership. The trip is designed and operated by the line, under brand licence.

Leaving from Quebec

The international flight is not included in the fare. Some essential internal flights are, when the itinerary says so. From Montreal, most of these regions need at least one connection, often two, and door-to-door time exceeds what the brochure suggests.

A rule learned the hard way: arrive at least a day before embarkation, two if the time difference is large. On an expedition there is no catching up: the ship has sailed.
