A ship built for one archipelago

MS Paul Gauguin left Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, launched on 25 April 1997 and delivered on 1 December that year. Nineteen thousand two hundred gross tons, 154 metres by 22, seven decks, 5.2 metres of draft. Three hundred and thirty-two guests to two hundred and fifteen crew.

That draft is not a technical footnote. It is the ship's whole reason for being: she was drawn to enter the lagoons of the Society and Tuamotu islands, where deeper hulls anchor offshore and send tenders. She practically never leaves French Polynesia, and that is a choice, not a limit.

The marina

At the stern, a fold-down platform drops to the waterline. Kayaks and paddleboards go in from there, and snorkel gear is provided for the voyage. It is the sort of fitting you find on a private yacht and rarely on a three-hundred-berth ship. Star Clipper, in our catalogue, plays the same card with a watersports deck.

What the fare covers

A great deal, and it is the most generous of the four large pages we rewrote this month. All meals; drinks, including a selection of wines and spirits, beer and water; twenty-four-hour room service; a minibar restocked daily; gratuities for cabin, dining and bar staff; kayaks and paddleboards; snorkel gear; Wi-Fi; and the troupe of Polynesian dancers and musicians who travel aboard.

What the line does not say: neither shore excursions nor airfare appear in its inclusions list. For a departure from Montréal to Papeete the flight weighs heavily, and it is the first thing to have priced.

What the calendar sells

One hundred and sixty-seven departures are on sale on this page: twenty-four in 2026, sixty-five in 2027, seventy-eight in 2028. Lengths run from six to fifteen days, six and seven days coming up thirty-seven times each, ten days thirty-three. Papeete appears eighty times: it is the home port, and almost everything leaves from there. The itineraries cover the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, the Marquesas and the Cook Islands.

A word on what you will see on screen: the itinerary labels arrive in English on the French page — “7 Night Tahiti and the Society Islands Croisière”. That is the supplier's feed, not the page. The dates, lengths and ports are right.

Who owns this ship

Ponant bought her in July 2020 and re-registered her in Wallis and Futuna, which returned her to the French flag. The Paul Gauguin Cruises brand was kept, and the the line's own page carries the full history.

If you are hesitating

A three-hundred-berth ship in a lagoon is not the same thing as a twelve-hundred-berth ship in a port. If it is the scale that draws you rather than the destination, Oceania Vista shows the other end of the spectrum, and her page is current.
