MSC Seaside: year-round at PortMiami, Ocean Cay on every sailing, and a promenade that circles the ship
MSC Seaside gave its name to an entire class. It measures 153,516 gross tons, 323 metres long by 41 wide, draws 8.8 metres and rises about 74 metres above the waterline. Nineteen decks in total, sixteen open to guests, ten holding the 2,066 cabins: 1,610 outside, 454 inside and 54 accessible. It carries 4,140 guests at double occupancy and up to 5,119 once every upper berth and sofa bed is in use, with 1,413 crew. Fincantieri built it in Monfalcone, delivered it on November 29, 2017, and it entered service on December 1 before Sophia Loren named it at PortMiami on December 21, 2017. The ship is homeported at PortMiami year-round since November 16, 2025, and MSC has confirmed that base through at least April 2027.
A seaside condo rather than a floating shopping mall
The Seaside class was drawn against the industry grain. Instead of a covered arcade buried in the middle of the ship, a two-level open-air promenade wraps the hull on deck 8, metres above the water, lined with bars and terraces. Balcony cabins open straight onto that promenade, the stern steps down in terraces like the floors of an apartment block facing the sea, and panoramic elevators climb the outside of the hull. Two glass-floored catwalks cantilever over the drop. The whole concept lives on warm weather: it is what makes the ship in Miami, and it leaves a lot of unusable square metres the moment it rains or blows, as guests aboard MSC Seaview discover during the cooler weeks of the Mediterranean season.
Ocean Cay is on every sailing, and the ship ties up alongside
Every MSC Seaside cruise calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the line's private island in the Bahamas. The ship berths at a real pier, so you walk down the gangway with no tender and no queue on a floating dock. The island covers roughly forty hectares, holds eight beaches and takes about twenty minutes to cross on foot. On selected departures MSC Seaside stays into the evening and the central lighthouse lights up after dark. That late call is the clearest gap between MSC and the other Bahamian private islands, which ships generally leave by late afternoon.
Three and four nights: the format that sells it in Quebec
The program is built on short three- and four-night runs to Nassau and Ocean Cay, with five- to eight-night Caribbean departures at peak periods. PortMiami sits about fifteen kilometres from Miami International, which Montreal-Trudeau reaches nonstop in roughly three and a half hours. Fly in the night before anyway: one delayed Saturday morning flight and the ship sails without you. For winter 2026-2027, MSC Seaside is one of four MSC ships based in Miami, which widens the choice of dates considerably.
Service in six languages: a genuine edge, never a promise
MSC announces, signposts and entertains in five or six languages including French, which Carnival and Royal Caribbean do not. For a Quebec traveller that is the single strongest argument for MSC Cruises. Expectations still need calibrating by homeport: out of Miami, English leads by a wide margin, Spanish and Portuguese follow, and French is present without being front and centre. Ask for the French daily programme at guest services on embarkation day and it is usually available.
Two ships worth weighing against MSC Seaside
MSC Seascape takes the same idea sixteen metres longer and one deck taller, but it sails from Galveston and its Texas itineraries skip Ocean Cay entirely. MSC World America has held Miami since April 2025 with 215,863 gross tons, seven themed districts and an eleven-deck dry slide: the ship for someone who wants spectacle rather than life on open decks.
Who should skip MSC Seaside
The ship dates from 2017 and has never had a full refurbishment. Its only drydock, July 11 to 18, 2022 at Fincantieri Palermo, followed an electrical fault on one engine. Cabins and finishes are original, properly maintained but visibly older than those on the Seaside EVO pair. The MSC Yacht Club here holds roughly 86 suites across decks 16 to 18, against 131 on its younger sisters. Add a leaner crew-to-guest ratio than the American lines run, included coffee that disappoints, bottled water billed separately, elevators that jam at peak hours and Wi-Fi that stays slow even on the upper plan. Finally, under a Bella fare MSC assigns your cabin location, which remains the most common complaint on return.
