Star Princess: the fixes learned from Sun, Alaska, and Port Canaveral from 2027

Star Princess repeats the Sun hull exactly: 177,882 gross tons, 345 m by 47 m, 20 decks with 16 open to guests, 2,162 staterooms, 4,320 guests at double occupancy and up to 5,189 with every berth in use, about 1,550 crew. Fincantieri delivered her at Monfalcone on 26 September 2025. She is based in Seattle for Alaska through 20 September 2026. Not to be confused with the 2002 Star Princess, later Pacific Encounter and Carnival Encounter.

Second and last of her class

Princess built her knowing what had gone wrong on Sun Princess: a bigger family and sports area on the top deck, extra restaurant seating, a bigger casino. These are adjustments. The circulation bottlenecks remain, since the architecture is identical: services packed amidships, no full outdoor lap of the ship. The pool deck stays small for 4,320 people. And a norovirus outbreak affected more than 150 people aboard in March 2026.

The Sphere, the glazed Piazza and the Princess Arena

The geodesic glass dome across decks 17 and 18 gives the class its name: a pool under glass by day, aerial acts and candlelight concerts at night. In Alaska it is the ship's most useful room on a wet day. The three-level Piazza on decks 7 to 9 opens to the sea through a glass facade instead of the enclosed Royal-class atrium. The Princess Arena, two decks and more than 1,000 seats, carries the productions.

LNG in Alaska: less bunkering, therefore more diesel

The same dual-fuel setup as on Sun. The benefit is local first: sulphur oxides and fine particulates nearly gone, nitrogen oxides sharply down. The West Coast offers less bunkering infrastructure than the Mediterranean, so the share of diesel burned during Seattle seasons runs higher. The core does not change: a fossil fuel, unburned methane escaping the engines and far more warming than CO2, a modest net gain.

Which cabin, and a Sanctuary paid for in advance

The Sanctuary Collection occupies decks 15 and 16 aft with 215 staterooms, 80 of them suites, opening the Sanctuary Restaurant, Club and adult pool. On this class The Sanctuary is not bought by the day: it is paid for in advance, through the cabin category. The aft corner rooms carry rounded balconies cantilevered over the wake, with no published category name. The 100 Cove Balcony rooms, recessed into the hull, suit cold weather.

Seattle, Fort Lauderdale, then Port Canaveral

The 7 and 8-day Alaska loops call at Ketchikan, Tracy Arm Fjord, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria through 20 September 2026. Caribbean sailings resume from Fort Lauderdale on 20 October 2026; Alaska returns from May to September 2027. Then it shifts. From autumn 2027 and throughout 2028, the Caribbean homeport becomes Port Canaveral rather than Fort Lauderdale. The flight changes with it: Orlando, then 72 km and about an hour of road, where Fort Lauderdale sat twenty minutes from the pier.

The Medallion and Captain's Circle

The disc unlocks your stateroom as you approach and lets you order from anywhere aboard. The other side: an app to complete before you travel, your position tracked continuously. At Princess Cruises, Captain's Circle runs four tiers, Gold, Ruby, Platinum and Elite, reached through cruises sailed or days at sea.

Two ships to compare with Star Princess

Enchanted Princess belongs to the earlier generation, smaller and less crowded, with more included at table. Majestic Princess also works Alaska and carries the SeaWalk, a walkway the Sphere class skipped.

Who Star Princess is wrong for

Anyone set on a full outdoor lap every morning. Anyone who sticks to what is included and refuses to pay a second time to eat well. Anyone expecting a quiet lounger without booking a Sanctuary stateroom. Anyone who hates crowds in July or August, when every berth fills. And anyone holding a 2028 flight to Fort Lauderdale: the ship will not be there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Star Princess measures 177,882 gross tons across 345 m of length and 47 m of beam, with 20 decks, 16 of them open to guests, and 2,162 staterooms. She carries 4,320 guests at double occupancy with roughly 1,550 crew, exactly matching her sister Sun Princess. Fincantieri delivered her at Monfalcone on 26 September 2025 as hull 6311, and she sailed her maiden voyage from Barcelona on 4 October 2025. The name trap applies here too: the previous Star Princess, delivered in 2002, left Princess in 2021 to become Pacific Encounter and then Carnival Encounter; the ship described here is brand new and unrelated.
Both figures coexist because they count different things. Double occupancy, 4,320, assumes two guests per stateroom and underpins the ship's space ratio of 34. Maximum capacity, 5,189, is reached when third and fourth berths are filled, a common scenario on July and August Alaska departures during family travel season. On those full sailings, expect longer waits at the World Fresh Marketplace buffet and on the deck 9 public balconies during glacier viewing.
Star Princess arrived a year and a half later and came with the fixes learned from the Sun Princess launch built in from day one. The three documented changes are an enlarged family and sports area on the top deck, extra seating added in the restaurants, and a bigger casino with more than 200 slot machines; on top of that, her Love by Britto seats 88 on deck 17 against 68 on Sun Princess. Technically the two ships are identical, dual-fuel LNG and marine diesel included, but LNG bunkering availability differs by region, and the West Coast and Alaska offer less infrastructure than the Mediterranean, which raises the share of marine diesel burned during Seattle seasons. A guest choosing this ship on environmental grounds should know that LNG mainly improves local air quality, with sulphur oxides and particulates nearly eliminated, and does far less for the carbon balance, partly because dual-fuel engines leak unburned methane.
Star Princess transited the Panama Canal for the first time in April 2026 to reach the Pacific coast, then ran the Alaska season from Seattle between May and September on 7 and 8-day loops calling at Ketchikan, Tracy Arm Fjord, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria. The season closes with a one-way Seattle to Vancouver run on 20 September, followed by repositioning sailings from Vancouver on 28 September and from Los Angeles on 4 October. She then resumes Caribbean sailings from Fort Lauderdale starting 20 October 2026, on loops of 5 to 15 days. From Montreal, the Alaska season is reached through Seattle or Vancouver and the Caribbean winter through Fort Lauderdale.
In 2027 Star Princess runs the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale between January and April, moves back to the Pacific on a 17-day one-way departing Fort Lauderdale on 3 April, works Alaska from Seattle from May to September, then comes south on a 24-day Vancouver to Port Canaveral sailing on 3 October. From autumn 2027 and throughout 2028, her Caribbean homeport becomes Port Canaveral, Florida, rather than Fort Lauderdale. That shift changes the flight you buy: Port Canaveral is served by Orlando airport, about 72 km away, a road transfer of roughly an hour, whereas Fort Lauderdale sat twenty minutes from the pier. Montreal to Orlando is a nonstop, as is Montreal to Vancouver; Montreal to Seattle exists nonstop but seasonally, so a May or September Alaska departure often calls for a connection or a flight into Vancouver the day before.
The Sanctuary Collection gathers 215 staterooms aft on decks 15 and 16, including 80 suites and 123 mini-suites, with a reserved Sanctuary Restaurant, Sanctuary Club and pool; it is the best choice for anyone who wants a quiet space in Alaska without fighting for a lounger. The Signature Collection covers the Signature, Sky, Owner's and Penthouse suites, served by the Signature Restaurant and the Signature Lounge aft on decks 15 and 16, whose corner staterooms carry the rounded balconies that cantilever over the wake. The Reserve Collection applies to mini-suites, including the deck 9 Cabana staterooms with veranda and private outdoor patio. On a Seattle Alaska round trip the balcony earns its premium, because Tracy Arm Fjord and the Inside Passage are best watched from the stateroom, and both sides get the views since the ship sails out and back. The 100 Cove Balcony staterooms, recessed into the hull and sheltered from wind, are a smart compromise in Alaska where high balconies are cold and blustery.
The three-storey Piazza occupies decks 7 to 9 with its glass facade open to the sea, housing Coffee Currents, the International Café, Bellini's and Crooners, while the Sea View Terrace on deck 16 forward provides a panoramic lounge under glass. The Sphere, the glass dome across decks 17 and 18, is a pool under glass by day and a performance space by night with aerial acts and a candlelight concert series; in Alaska it is the single most useful room on the ship on a wet day. Dining runs from the three-deck main dining room and the deck 9 World Fresh Marketplace buffet through Alfredo's to the extra-charge venues, Crown Grill, Sabatini's, Makoto Ocean, Umai Teppanyaki on deck 8, The Catch by Rudi and the 88-seat Love by Britto on deck 17, with O'Malley's Irish Pub served à la carte. The Princess Arena, a two-deck theatre seating over 1,000 with a reconfigurable stage, carries the main productions, and Spellbound by Magic Castle keeps its illusion room on deck 8. Outside, the SkyDeck combines a sports court, a jogging track, a splash zone and suspended climbing elements, while the Sanctuary aft on deck 18 closes off the adult area with its pool and cabanas.
The fixes carried over from Sun Princess are real, but they are incremental rather than structural. The circulation bottlenecks remain, because the architecture is unchanged: services concentrated amidships, elevators overloaded in late afternoon, and no exterior promenade wrapping the whole ship. The pool deck stays undersized for 4,320 guests, a flaw less obvious in Alaska than in the Caribbean, and the share of paid dining continues to weigh on a guest who sticks to what is included. A norovirus outbreak also affected more than 150 guests and crew on a Caribbean sailing in March 2026, a useful reminder that a ship this size amplifies such episodes and that hand hygiene on board is not optional.
The fare covers the stateroom, meals in the main dining room, the World Fresh Marketplace buffet, the International Café, shows in the Princess Arena, the pools including the one under the Sphere, the fitness centre, the youth clubs and basic room service. Charged on top are the specialty restaurants such as Crown Grill, Sabatini's, Makoto Ocean, Umai Teppanyaki, The Catch by Rudi and Love by Britto, O'Malley's served à la carte, alcoholic and soft drinks, MedallionNet Wi-Fi, shore excursions in Juneau or Skagway, the Lotus Spa, laundry and the casino. The Princess Plus and Princess Premier bundles package some of those paid items and can be bought before departure or on board. Access to the Sanctuary Club and the Signature Lounge depends solely on the stateroom category booked.
A daily crew appreciation charge is added automatically to every guest's MedallionClass account, children included, for each night on board. The scale varies by stateroom category, from an interior up to the Sanctuary and Signature suites which fall under the highest tier. Every drink bought at a bar, at Crooners, at Bellini's or at the Wheelhouse Bar, carries a separate service charge. These charges can be prepaid from Montreal before departure, can be bundled inside Princess Plus or Premier, or can be revised at the guest services desk during the cruise.
Two levels exist: the Princess Plus package, allowing up to 15 alcoholic drinks a day under a value ceiling per glass, and the Princess Premier package, with a higher ceiling and no daily limit. The package works in every bar on board, from the Piazza to the deck 17 pool bars and on through O'Malley's and the Sanctuary Bar, and it covers specialty coffees, juices, soft drinks and bottled water. An Alaska cruise changes the arithmetic compared with the Caribbean, because days are largely spent ashore in Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan, which mechanically cuts the number of drinks taken on board. Each adult may bring one 750 ml bottle of wine aboard at embarkation in Seattle, free to drink in the stateroom; opened in a restaurant it attracts a corkage charge.
Yes, through MedallionNet, available in staterooms and public spaces from the Piazza up to the SkyDeck. It is sold by the day or for the whole cruise, and it is bundled into Princess Plus for one device and into Princess Premier for up to four. In Alaska coverage is good along the Inside Passage but weakens inside steep fjords, notably at the head of Tracy Arm, where the rock walls cut the satellite signal. The same caution applies to the long repositioning sailings of 28 September and 3 October, which include several days of open ocean.
Yes, and this is where she improves on Sun Princess, since the family and sports area on the top deck was enlarged. The clubs split by age, Firefly Park on deck 6 for the youngest, Neon Grove on deck 7 for tweens and The Underground for teenagers, with the SkyDeck, its splash zone, sports court and suspended climbing elements for sea days. Accommodation follows, with roughly 1,518 balcony staterooms sleeping three or four and about a hundred connecting staterooms. The minimum age to sail is 6 months, raised to 12 months on the long repositioning voyages; for Alaska, pack warm layers, because the best moments of the cruise happen on the open decks.
The Princess Captain's Circle has four tiers, Gold, Ruby, Platinum and Elite, reached through the number of cruises completed or days spent at sea. Benefits rise with the tier: priority embarkation in Seattle or Port Canaveral, members-only receptions, laundry benefits and internet credit at the upper levels. A season of 7 or 8-day Alaska loops builds the cruise count faster than a long repositioning, while the 24-day Vancouver to Port Canaveral sailing in October 2027 builds the day count; both routes reach the same tier. Some benefits are recognised across Carnival Corporation brands, which matters to a client already loyal with Holland America or Cunard.
Rarely on Alaska itineraries, because the Inside Passage is a sheltered channel between islands and the ship spends most of her time under its cover. The stretch to watch on Seattle departures is the exposed run between Victoria and Ketchikan, where Pacific swell makes itself felt for one night outbound and one night home. The steadiest staterooms sit amidships on decks 8 to 11; the aft suites on decks 15 and 16 and the most forward staterooms move more. The glazed Sphere and the Piazza give a visible horizon from indoors, which helps sensitive guests, and the medical centre sells patches and tablets, though bringing your own from Montreal is simpler.
