Viking Aegir: the only one of our Danube ships to serve both German gateways

99 departures measured on 25 August 2026, spread differently from the eleven other ships we sell on this river: 34 from Budapest to Regensburg, 34 from Regensburg to Budapest, and 18 from Passau to Budapest.

The other ships work one gateway or the other. This one does both. If your dates are tight and either embarkation city suits you, hers is the first calendar to have checked, because it covers two inventories instead of one.

Regensburg or Passau, what changes

Regensburg sits an hour by road from Munich airport, Passau an hour and a half. Regensburg has a World Heritage medieval centre and a twelfth-century stone bridge; Passau is smaller, built on a point between three rivers, and can be crossed on foot in an evening.

For arriving the day before with jet lag, Regensburg asks less of you. For a full day before boarding, both hold up. Viking Tor serves Regensburg only, but with 152 departures instead of 99.

One more practical note: whichever gateway you pick, the ship berths in the city itself rather than at an industrial terminal. On the Danube that is the norm, not a selling point — but it is worth stating for anyone whose reference is a Caribbean cruise port.

Ægir, the sea and the ale

Ægir is the giant of the sea, the one who receives the gods in a hall lit by gold and brews their ale in an enormous cauldron. He is the only figure in the Norse pantheon whose reputation rests as much on hospitality as on power.

On board, beer, wine and soft drinks accompany lunch and dinner. Gratuities are not included. Exactly what is included varies by itinerary and date, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

The hull: a Longship, 190 berths

135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. One crew member for every 3.58 guests, the Longship-class ratio.

For a fuller calendar on a single axis, Viking Var offers 163 departures from Regensburg and Viking Vilhjalm 189 from Passau.

Getting there from Montreal

One connection to Munich or Budapest — Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, Amsterdam — for 13 to 15 hours door to door.

Going through an agency is not optional here

Try it from home: Viking's reservations site redirects Quebec addresses to a page announcing it is unavailable and inviting travellers to reach an agent. 30 seconds is enough to see it. On this line, a Quebec client has no other way in.

Our Viking River Cruises advisors give you in writing, before you book, the exact fare, the inclusions, the exclusions and the conditions. AquaTerra Travels follows Quebec consumer protection rules and participates in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
