Viking Mimir: 37 departures, and how to pack for fifteen days

The rule that always surprises
A fifteen-day cruise does not call for more luggage than a seven-day one. That is the first thing to know, and most people do not believe it until they have lived it.
The reason is simple: on a European river you are in a town every day and there is laundry on board. Bringing enough for a week and washing once is ample. What weighs down a suitcase is not the length of the trip, it is the number of different situations to dress for.
What actually matters
Walking shoes already broken in, because calls are made on cobbles and mean two or three hours on your feet, nearly every day. Layers rather than a heavy coat: over fifteen days between Amsterdam and Budapest you cross several climates, and the temperature gap between the ends of the trip can exceed fifteen degrees.
A European adapter, a windbreaker, and room to spare on the way home. Everything else can be bought en route in any port town, which is not true in mid-Atlantic.
Evening dress
There is no black-tie gala evening on a river ship. The code is described as smart casual: clean trousers and a shirt are enough, a jacket does no harm. Nobody will look at you sideways for having no tie, and nobody expects one.
The hull: a Longship, 190 berths
135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. One crew member for every 3.58 guests, a ratio belonging to the Longship class — it does not hold across the rest of Viking's river fleet, where it falls to 1.71 on the Nile.

Mímir, the head that advises
Mímir guards the well of wisdom at the foot of Yggdrasil. Odin gives him an eye for the right to drink from it once. Later, Mímir is beheaded during the war between Æsir and Vanir; Odin embalms the head and keeps it near him, because it goes on speaking and giving counsel.
