ms Oosterdam: 2,024 guests, 27 more staterooms than her sisters, and the first ship through Evolution
The ms Oosterdam measures 82,820 gross tons, 285.24 m long by 32.22 m wide, with 11 passenger decks. With roughly 1,012 staterooms she carries 2,024 guests at double occupancy and about 2,429 at maximum, with around 817 crew. Fincantieri delivered her at Marghera and she entered service in August 2003 under the Dutch flag. Her current home port rotates between Barcelona, Rome, Trieste and Piraeus, and becomes Port Everglades once her refit is done.
Why she carries 56 more guests than the Westerdam
This is the only real capacity difference among the four Vista ships, and it traces to one specific yard period. In April 2016 Holland America added 27 staterooms on the Observation Deck of the Oosterdam: 18 verandah and 9 interior. The ship went from about 985 to about 1,012 staterooms, or 54 more lower berths. That is what produces 2,024 guests against 1,968 on the Westerdam, 1,970 on the Zuiderdam and 1,972 on the Noordam. The trade-off is measurable: at full occupancy her space ratio drops below her sisters', and the Lido Market works harder at peak hours.
First of six ships rebuilt, and what comes out the other side
The Oosterdam opens Holland America Evolution, announced 14 April 2026 and entrusted to Fincantieri across six ships. She receives 30 Solo Verandahs, single staterooms with a private balcony and work area, two Bridgeview Suites of about 84 m² with panoramic views, 24 Vista Suites borrowed from the Pinnacle class, a reimagined Pinnacle Suite of about 144 m², and the Grand Dutch Café until now reserved for the three Pinnacle ships. The line cites 76 staterooms added in total, which will push her capacity higher still. Propulsion and energy management work rounds out the project.
Back in service 2 December 2027, and the itinerary shifts that may follow
The Oosterdam sails again on 2 December 2027 with a seven-day Western Mediterranean itinerary from Barcelona, calling in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, followed by a 13-night transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale. Winter 2027-28 runs from Port Everglades on 11- and 12-night sailings to the Southern Caribbean and the ABC islands. In spring 2028 she transits the Panama Canal toward the Pacific coast. Before all that, her 2027 Mediterranean season runs from April into the autumn with 14 itineraries of 7 to 11 days. Holland America does not publish the dry dock entry date and warns that itineraries around this period may move. Any client booking in 2027 needs that caveat in writing.
What is actually aboard today
The two-level Vista Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Lido Market, Dive-In and Crow's Nest Café cover the food; the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard have carried the music since B.B. King's Blues Club left the four Vista ships in 2023. The Oosterdam is also one of the few ships in the fleet with the High Score games room for teenagers. Her 5 to 19 April 2025 dry dock at Grand Bahama Shipyard enlarged the casino, rebuilt the spa with a co-ed sauna and a couples treatment room, and replaced balcony furniture in 400 staterooms. Tamarind, often credited to this ship, sits on the Signature and Pinnacle vessels instead.
Three ships to weigh against the ms Oosterdam
The ms Zuiderdam is the second Evolution ship: same transformation, back 2 April 2028, and 32 Solo Verandahs rather than 30. The ms Noordam suits anyone who finds the Oosterdam too full, with 52 fewer guests and slightly more tonnage. The ms Koningsdam shows what the Grand Dutch Café already delivers on a Pinnacle ship, before the refit even happens. Our Holland America Line page compares all five classes.
Who the ms Oosterdam is wrong for
A client who wants to sail between December 2027 and the following winter on a ship whose itinerary is set in stone should look elsewhere: the window around the transformation stays fluid. Anyone chasing empty open decks will pay for those 2,024 guests at peak hours. Her 2026 and 2027 Mediterranean departures require a transatlantic flight and a hotel night before embarkation, which adds to the time budget.
