Carnival Sensation: the ship was scrapped at Aliağa in April 2022

The Carnival Sensation no longer exists and no cruise can be booked aboard her. Her last revenue sailing left Miami on 9 March 2020, days before the industry shut down worldwide, and she never carried paying guests again. Carnival confirmed her retirement in February 2022 and sold her for demolition: she left Miami on 18 March 2022 and was beached at Aliağa, Turkey, on 5 April 2022. Floated out on 1 November 1993 at the Kværner Masa-Yards shipyard in Helsinki and christened the following month by four Carnival vice-presidents, she measured 70,367 gross tons and 261 metres, with 2,052 guests at double occupancy.

The quietest of the eight, and the most useful in 2005

Third of the class, Sensation began at Miami in 1993, then served Tampa for six years, New Orleans, Galveston, Port Canaveral for a decade, and Miami again from 2016. Joe Farcus gave her the most restrained interior of the class: instead of the usual spectacle, artwork brought out by ultraviolet lighting, a play of light rather than a pile-up of materials. Through 2005 and 2006 US federal authorities chartered her to house displaced residents and relief crews after Hurricane Katrina, one of the rare occasions when a cruise hull did something other than holidays. A move to Mobile was scheduled for July 2020 and never happened.

Why all eight Fantasy-class ships were withdrawn

The whole class came out of the Helsinki yard between 1990 and 1998: eight identical 70,000-ton hulls, almost without balconies, built for three- to five-night cruises. They drove Carnival's growth for twenty years before becoming the least profitable ships in the fleet. The March 2020 suspension pulled the decision forward by two or three years. Carnival Corporation disposed of nineteen ships across its brands in 2020 and 2021, and six of this class were broken up between July 2020 and November 2022. Sensation was the second last to go.

What still sails in the same spirit

Two Fantasy-class ships remain, and they are the only honest comparison. The Carnival Paradise runs four- and five-night sailings to Cozumel from Tampa, the port Sensation served from 1998 to 2004. The Carnival Elation offers short Bahamas itineraries from Jacksonville, closer to what the ship did out of Port Canaveral and Miami. If you would rather have a newer hull with a balcony and a wider choice of routes, start from our Carnival Cruise Line page instead.

If you would rather see what the line does today, on a hull that has nothing in common with this one, Carnival Celebration is a 2022 delivery, twice the tonnage of the old Fantasy class. She does not replace Carnival Sensation: she shows how far thirty years went.

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. This ship no longer exists: she was scrapped at Aliağa, Turkey, in April 2022. No agency can sell her, and the listings or photographs still circulating online describe a vessel that is no longer afloat.
Her last commercial cruise left Miami on 9 March 2020, days before the industry shut down worldwide, and she never carried passengers again; Carnival confirmed her retirement in February 2022, then sold her for scrap.
Because the name still circulates and a 404 answers nobody. We keep it to say what happened and to point to the ship that comes closest today.
Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise, the only two survivors of the Fantasy class: same plans, same dimensions, same short formats. If you prefer a recent hull, Carnival Celebration is a different generation altogether.
Eight. Six were sold for scrap between July 2020 and November 2022. Two remain, Elation and Paradise.
At the Kværner Masa-Yards yard, in Helsinki. It is the Finnish yard that delivered all eight units of the class.
About 70,367 gross tons for 261 metres, with 2,052 guests at double occupancy and some 920 crew.
They were thirty years old, had few balconies and returned less per guest than modern tonnage. The worldwide shutdown of 2020 brought forward a decision that was already coming.
Most often on the demolition beaches of Aliağa, in Turkey, near Izmir. Five of the six in this class ended there. The sixth, Carnival Fascination, was beached at Gadani, in Pakistan.
All bookings were handled by the line at the time of retirement, several years ago. If you still hold a document naming this ship, bring it to your advisor: it predates 2022.
No. Carnival sold her straight to the breakers, with no intervening operator. Only one of the six was resold: Carnival Fascination, briefly renamed Century Harmony.
She spent her career on the short Caribbean and Bahamas formats, out of the southern United States, like the rest of her class.
None, and that zero is accurate. It is the first thing this page should have said.
Your agency, and it alone. Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, your payments pass through a trust account, and the compensation fund for travel agency clients covers your departure. That applies to the ship you book instead of this one.
