MSC Splendida: out of drydock in February 2026 with the class's first rebuilt Yacht Club

The MSC Splendida is the second Fantasia-class ship: 137,936 gross tons, 333.30 m long, 37.92 m wide, 17 decks with 14 open to guests and 9 holding cabins. Her 1,637 cabins, 43 of them accessible, hold 3,274 guests at double occupancy and up to 4,363 at maximum capacity, with roughly 1,370 crew. Built by STX France in Saint-Nazaire, delivered on 4 July 2009 and christened in Barcelona on 12 July by Sophia Loren. She spends 2026 in the Western Mediterranean and on island itineraries, then heads south to South America, homeported mainly in Buenos Aires from December 2026 to March 2027.

Twenty-seven days in drydock and a brand-new Yacht Club restaurant

The MSC Splendida sat at Palumbo in Valletta from 10 January to 7 February 2026 for technical work, class surveys and fresh carpet and upholstery. She came out carrying the first MSC Yacht Club restaurant in the class's new design, with darker tones, reworked lighting and sea views. Her sisters follow on a staggered schedule: the MSC Fantasia in December 2026, the MSC Divina in April 2027 and the MSC Preziosa in February 2028. In practical terms she is the freshest of the four in 2026, and that advantage has an expiry date.

What the MSC Yacht Club covers on this ship

Seventy-one suites occupy decks 12, 15 and 16 behind a keycard door. Attached to it: a butler on call at any hour, a concierge, the panoramic Top Sail Lounge, an à la carte dining room, a pool and sun deck closed off from the rest of the ship, the MSC Aurea Spa thermal circuit, the Premium Extra drinks package and internet access. This is what separates the Fantasia class from MSC's Lirica and Musica ships, which have no reserved enclave at any fare. For guests used to high-end all-inclusive resorts, it is often the only service level that keeps a ship this size from feeling impersonal.

Barcelona and Marseille in summer, Buenos Aires for the austral winter

She went back to work on 7 February 2026 running Western Mediterranean weeks through Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Naples, Palermo and La Goulette. From late April she runs a summer island program across Spain, Italy, France and Malta. From Montreal, Barcelona and Rome remain the cleanest gateways, with a single European connection. The following winter works on completely different logic: eight and nine-night sailings between Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan ports out of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, reached by a long overnight flight through Toronto, Panama City or São Paulo. Treat it as a trip to plan, not a quick escape.

French on board follows the region, not the brochure

The MSC Splendida announces and signs in five or six languages including French, with crew moving between them easily. MSC Cruises also assigns nationality hosts, which remains the line's most concrete advantage for Quebec travellers. The caveat is geographic rather than corporate: Mediterranean sailings carry plenty of French and Swiss guests and the service follows, while the South American season is dominated by Portuguese and Spanish in the dining room and in the entertainment. Guests booking primarily for French-language comfort should aim at the European summer.

MSC Splendida or MSC Bellissima: ten years between two hulls

The MSC Bellissima, in service since March 2019, is the next generation: more than 170,000 gross tons, an indoor gallery under an LED ceiling, an aqua park and a larger MSC Yacht Club, carrying roughly 1,200 more guests at double occupancy. The MSC Splendida answers better for travellers who want thinner crowds, a ship they can learn in a day and a recently rebuilt Yacht Club. The MSC Bellissima suits families with teenagers and anyone who wants entertainment at every hour. Both offer a keycard enclave with butler service, something the Lirica class does not sell at any price.

Who should not book the MSC Splendida

Solo travellers find little programming built for them, and smoke-sensitive guests notice more cigarette haze than on a North American ship, especially around the casino. Specialty dining choice is thin for a vessel this size. Interior circulation has a maze-like reputation, with blocked passages near the dining rooms, and the ship has no deck 17, an Italian superstition that still confuses guests reading the deck plan. Steer clear of cabins next to the Club 33 disco and of YC1 suites sitting behind lifeboats.

Frequently Asked Questions

MSC Splendida sails 3,274 guests at double occupancy and reaches 4,363 at maximum capacity once upper berths are filled. She measures 333.30 metres, registers 137,936 gross tons and offers 1,637 cabins, 43 of them accessible. Crew numbers around 1,370. On a July family sailing, plan for the maximum figure rather than the brochure one.
MSC Splendida sets aside 71 suites on decks 12, 15 and 16 behind a keycard door. Included are a butler around the clock, a concierge, the panoramic Top Sail Lounge, an à la carte restaurant, a private pool and sun deck, MSC Aurea Spa thermal suite access, the Premium Extra drinks package and premium internet.
MSC Splendida was the first Fantasia-class ship to receive the redesigned Yacht Club restaurant, completed in early 2026 with darker tones, reworked lighting and panoramic sea views. Her sisters follow on a staggered schedule: MSC Fantasia in December 2026, MSC Divina in April 2027 and MSC Preziosa in February 2028.
MSC Splendida announces and signs in five or six languages including French, with crew switching between them easily and nationality hosts on duty. The honest caveat concerns geography rather than policy: French runs deep on Mediterranean sailings where French and Swiss guests are numerous, and thins out considerably during the South American season.
MSC Splendida was delivered in July 2009 and emerged from a twenty-seven-day drydock at Palumbo in Valletta between 10 January and 7 February 2026, covering technical work, class surveys and fresh carpet and upholstery throughout. She remains a 2009 hull, and guests still describe the interior circulation as maze-like, with blocked passages near the dining rooms.
Solo travellers find little programming built for them on MSC Splendida, and smoke-sensitive guests notice more cigarette haze than they would on a North American ship, particularly around the casino. Specialty dining choice is thin. The ship also has no deck 17, an Italian superstition that still confuses guests reading the deck plan.
MSC Splendida returned to service on 7 February 2026 with seven-night Western Mediterranean runs through Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Naples, Palermo and La Goulette. From late April 2026 she shifts to a summer island program across Spain, Italy, France and Malta, then repositions across the Atlantic to South America in the autumn.
MSC Splendida spends December 2026 through March 2027 in South America, homeported in Buenos Aires with selected departures from Rio de Janeiro. Itineraries run eight and nine nights between Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan ports. She shares the region with MSC Seaview, MSC Musica, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Divina that season.
MSC Splendida has covered the most ground of the four. She launched MSC's South African market from Durban on 23 November 2023 as the largest ship ever based there, then took the 2024-2025 season in Santos after MSC postponed her Chinese deployment. She also served the Chinese market following a 2017 refit.
MSC Voyagers Club points scale with cruise length, cabin grade and the experience booked, from Bella through Yacht Club. A seven-night Fantastica cruise earns roughly 700 points per person. Tiers climb from Classic to Blue Diamond, and your balance stays active as long as you sail at least once every five years.
Yes. MSC matches elite status from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, along with Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt hotel tiers, into an equivalent MSC Voyagers Club level. Submit proof before your first sailing and expect a decision within a few business days. It works once per lifetime, so use it when your outside status is highest.
Buying one is optional, but the moment a single adult in the cabin takes a package, every other adult sharing that cabin must take the same one, and minors take the dedicated minors package. Gratuities are built in. The alcohol-free package is not honoured in specialty restaurants or at MSC's private island.
For the Mediterranean season, Barcelona and Rome give the shortest routings from Montreal, usually connecting through Paris, Lisbon or Frankfurt. For the austral winter, Buenos Aires means connecting in Toronto, Panama City or São Paulo on a long overnight flight. Either way, arrive a night early and sleep near the port.
Balconies dominate MSC Splendida, with 1,142 of 1,637 cabins offering one, which keeps the category affordable. Steer clear of YC1 suites blocked by lifeboats and cabins adjoining Club 33 disco. The 94 oceanview cabins without balconies are a sensible middle ground for guests who want daylight without paying veranda rates.
MSC Splendida was alongside in Tunis in March 2015 during the Bardo Museum attack, which killed guests who were ashore on excursion. In March 2020 a crew member was medically evacuated in Phuket with a suspected COVID-19 case, later confirmed, and more than 2,700 passengers disembarked there.
