Viking Kadlin: 77 departures to the Black Sea, where the Danube ends
Measured on 25 August 2026: 32 departures from Vienna to Constanța and 17 from Constanța to Vienna, out of 77 in total.
The delta, the river's last third
After 2,850 kilometres and ten countries, the Danube dissolves into a delta of more than 4,000 square kilometres, straddling Romania and Ukraine. It is Europe's largest continuous wetland, a World Heritage site since 1991 and a biosphere reserve.
More than 300 bird species have been recorded there, including the largest white pelican colony outside Africa. The delta is still growing: it advances towards the sea by tens of metres a year, fed by the silt the river has laid down for millennia.
Excursions there are made in small craft, because a 135-metre ship does not enter the channels. It is one of the few moments in the trip when you genuinely leave the format behind.
Constanța, and Rome's most famous exile
The city was called Tomis when Augustus banished the poet Ovid there in AD 8. Why is still unknown: Ovid speaks of a poem and a mistake, without ever saying which. There he wrote the Tristia and the Epistulae ex Ponto, eight years of letters begging to be recalled, and there he died without seeing Rome again.
A statue of him stands on the central square, which carries his name. The city, founded by Greek colonists in the sixth century BC, is among the oldest still inhabited in Romania.
The hull, in figures
Length 135 metres, capacity 190 guests, crew 53, 95 staterooms split into 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. The length is not a choice: it is what the locks accept.
The crew ratio, 3.58 guests per crew member, belongs to this class alone. On the Nile, the same company falls to 1.71.
Viking Rinda serves the same axis with 92 departures, and Viking Lif with 66.
Kaðlín, the name from elsewhere
Kaðlín is the Old Norse form of a Gaelic name, Caitlín, brought back to Iceland by Vikings who had taken wives in Ireland or the Hebrides. It is a reminder that Scandinavian expansion did not run one way: it brought back as much language as it imposed.
Getting there from Montreal
Vienna or Bucharest on a connection, usually through Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris or Amsterdam. Allow one to two hours by road between Bucharest and Constanța. Viking Skadi serves the upper Danube with 151 departures if easier access matters more.
Going through an agency is not optional here
Try it from home: Viking's reservations site redirects Quebec addresses to a page announcing it is unavailable and inviting travellers to reach an agent. 30 seconds is enough to see it. On this line, a Quebec client has no other way in.
Our Viking River Cruises advisors give you in writing, before you book, the exact fare, the inclusions, the exclusions and the conditions. AquaTerra Travels follows Quebec consumer protection rules and participates in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
